WOW! I had a really, really neat and strange thing happen in my tank today. Not sure if it is nature at work, a coincidence, or it proves Asterina Starfish communicate in some way or sense danger. But here is the story....
Today I bought and put a Harlequin shrimp in my tank. I've had the tank for 3 years and have probably 200 or more Asterina Starfish in there. You can see them all day and night moving around the liverock and usually on the back glass where I don't scrape the coralline algae. Typically at night you see more of them. But they are usually spread out all over the tank.
Well tonight. The first night since I put the Harlequin in the tank. The Asterina's are behaving like I've never seen them do before. Instead of being spread over the entire tank; (liverock and glass) every single one of them looks like they are trying to get out of the tank. Below is a picture of the corner of my tank (with the lights out) and the Asterina's are all at the top of the glass. I scoured the liverock with a flashlight and couldn't find a single one anywhere to be found. They are ALL on the top of the glass. WEIRD Behavior!!!
The Asternia's have never grouped up in the top of the tank like this before. There are literally two hundred or so on the upper part of the glass. They are all climbing up high.
To me, knowing my tank and looking at it every day and night; I've never seen this happen before today. Do you think its a coincidence? Maybe this is common and I've just never seen it. But I think it's pretty cool. Seems like they communicate somehow about the danger in the tank....
