Really nervous, temp swing in my pico :(

Hey fellow hobbyists,

a first for me happened last night… my heater crapped out allowing my beloved euphyllia dominant pico to drop to 67*f. of course i had to go to work, so i sent my boyfriend to the lfs to pick up a better heater and put it on a thermostat. everything was so ticked off when i left for work but it has a heater now and should be back to normal temp.

question is, will euphyllia tolerate a temp swing like that? im scared to see what i might come home to.

Beautiful pico! I think that it will probably be ok. Don't have much experience though. Did your corals look healthy before you left?

thank you kindly! that shot was last night. they looked healthy (nobody was secreting anything or giving the indication of die off) Just very closed up.

I would imagine that as long as you corrected the issue and don't apply any additional dramatic stressors you won't see any problems. Keep in corals are shipped and experience temps cooler than that.

Important thing is you corrected the issue, and the heater at least didn't get stuck on! That would have been a disaster.. so if you don't already make sure you have a controller for when the opposite happens!

It’ll be fine. Corals are able to handle lower temps far better than higher. 67° isn’t crazy low, I know people that keep their tanks at 72°, and I’ve had many coral shipments that were in the 60’s by the time I received them, and everything has always been okay. While big temp swings aren’t ideal, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

I've heard of people diving reefs and looking at their thermometers to see it was in the 60s. So I don't think it would be bad to be that low even if for an extended period (like a season long even).
