This a great community for information and I was really passionate about getting a snowflake eel for my new predatory tank. After all the negative feedback including too much waste made, probable tank escaping, and reef ruining, I am sadly not going to try an eel. I guess I will just choose other predatory fish such as lionfish or something. I was so excited about the snowflake but unfortunately the information I received was not what I wanted to hear.

First, by your picture im assuming your military, so thank you for everything you have done for us and our country! Second, all of those negative feedbacks can be combatted with counter measures. Make sure you have a large enough skimmer to control the waste, if need be put something heavy on a screen top, and keep it fed so it stays away from your corals. This forum is amazing, as you probably know, for every 100 people that a product or certain livestock has flourished, there is that one person that it screwed over. Take it with a grain of salt and if you think your up for the challenge I say go for it and especially go for it if its something you really want.

Thank you Sir. That was kind. I guess I just want everything to be perfect, but that may take some work. I do have a media reactor that I purchased. I wonder if this will help combat the added waste?

Haha everyone wants their tank to be perfect but, to be honest, most tanks take 5+ years to be "perfect". Media reactors are great for phosphates and nitrates but for waste, I would focus on a large enough skimmer. The skimmer will pull that waste your fish make out of the water, the bio reactor will just take out what the skimmer missed. GFO reactors are sweet though.

I agree with Tail. If you have your heart set on a certain species, a tank can be designed or retrofitted to support it. If you love eels, make an eel tank, if you love non-photosynthetic corals, design a tank for that. The only problems you'll run into are when your tank it just too small for certain livestock (like Tangs & standard Angels) or when you try to fit a square peg into a round hole (like putting seahorses in an SPS tank). Just do your research, find the challenges and address them.

That all being said... lionfish are awesome, and are super cool in a home aquarium.

Excellent! Thank you again Sir.

Check out fish of hex on you tube. He has a snowflake that he keeps in a mixed reef and I believe he has a few videos about keeping one. He is very informative i really like his channel.

Large skimmer. Glue you rocks together. Put a screen top from brs on your tank and you are fine

Also look at zebra eels. They are more laid back and want to escape less

Here is a guy I watch on youtube who has a beautiful tank with lots of sps corals, he has an eel in his tank. It's not a snowflake but a golden dwarf moray eel, I think they get to about the same size. He setup a tunnel under his sand to make sure his eel didn't wreck havoc on his tank. He actually just did an eel update. Might be worth the watch.
