Finally emptied my 200G reef tank today. Took 7 hours to take everything out, including every last grain of sand, and refill it with 120lbs of live sand and salt water. I had to do this because my invasive soft corals purchased 4 years ago, even after extensive pruning, took over the tank. These would be Xenia and polyps. Never again. No softies. Process was...
1) fill 80 gallon kiddie pool with saltwater and place Kessil over it, and multiple powerheads for flow and aeration. Used existing aquarium water thru water change process to fill pool.
2) place in pool a 100 lbs of cycled live rock from LFS.
3) Harvested rock and coral from tank, placing in pool, examining each piece for invasive, nuisance coral, and using hammer, ax, and plyers to save as much as possible.
4) emptied tank, and moved live stock to pool.
5) shop vac'ed tank to remove every drop of water and sand, and any invasive corals on walls.
6) refilled tank with fresh saltwater and 120lbs of live sand.
Tomorrow -
1) drain sump and clean.
2) place rockwork in tank, letting displaced water refill sump.
3) move coral and fish to tank.
12 to 16 hours of total work. hope i never have to do this again.
