i once moved a sps colony out of the DT to a 10G qt using the DT tank water and ran a small chiller that kept it 78 deg ran a small tunze also to keep the flow going. in 2 days it was RTN'd dead for some reason till this day i can't figure out.

It's a crap shoot really... I never had luck with bubble corals, always loved them but never kept one longer than a week... I have cut frags and placed them on the rack in the same tank and they die over night... I have gave frags to friends who lost them instantly when they put them in there tank and the same has happened with me... Normally with sps it will brown out and take for ever and a day to come back... Don't know if it's the lighting or po4 or just over all shock... I wander the same things some times how a coral ever makes it...
 
and yet we continue the fight to try to understand something we will probably never get....I love this hobby!

water change water change water change. When i set up my new tank i used 75% new water and everything instantly became much much happier.
 
lol yup i got the 50 gallons ready to rock. already changed 25 gallons. took the reactor off line.

yeah. i'm thinking that too. i guess live and learn. what size tank do you have? any issues when you first added gfo and hi cap carbon? how close did you follow the BRS recommended amount?
 
I run pretty close to the BRS suggestions. Slightly lower on gfo, slightly higher on rox8 carbon.

I started at about 20% the recommendation and worked my way up.

My [unfortunate] experience has shown that any quick change is bad. I helped a friend get his system cleaned up...slowly!
 
I had similar issues with gfo. All of a sudden it seemed like I had stn. Pulled the gfo and its getting back to normal...

ok so i think i did the right thing. maybe Gfo isn't for me. i think i just need to do weekly water changes and keep up with it.

I think TL is right about dropping the P04 to quickly. the problems I'm seeing in my tank as well with my sps hints the same symptoms. I don't have gfo but am running phosgaurd and noticed that I have less algae on my glass and SB. tells me my p04 is low and should be running well but my tank was used to having the po4s and needed a slower reduction. Have my phosgaurd off now and seems to be stable now. If I should decide to run p04 reduction again, I will go real slow..

I just read through this thread as I am having the same problem will acropora looking a little pale two days after adding new GFO/ Carbon. I am now convinced that I need to use a quarter of the dosage. I have a 120g total water volume and added 1/2 C of regular GFO and 1tbs of ROX carbon/ 10 gallons. I think I need to add 1/4 C of GFO and see what happens. I was just seeing signs of corals getting that deep color I love before I changed the GFO. I feed frozen food about 2 times a day and flakes and pellets 2 times a day which is why I was to keep changing the GFO monthly as the PO4 raises slighly but I guess its been lowered too fast with that amount.
