So I made the rookie mistake second time around and picked up the API master saltwater test kit. Here is my nitrate reading and not sure where it lands. I think it’s time to ditch it. Any one have a recommendation for a trustworthy brand? Thanks in advance.

Hanna High range is great ! But bear in mind that you can't get replacement reagents. Once you go through the 10 you get with the checker, you may have to wait a while.

I love the Hanna HR but the lack of reagents is frustrating. I like using the salifert nitrate test, but to be fair I've never used the Nyos.

I use the salifert nitrate test, it is very fast, seems accurate, is cheap and works for a large range. Once reagents are in stock on a consistent basis I will probably buy a Hanna HR as it would be nice to have a digital read out as well.

when you say " go through the 10" do you mean that you can only check the nitrates 10 times before it's useless

the tester only comes with 10 reagents, and the mad panic has caused a shortage of refills because people started stock pilling them......you know like toilet paper in 2020
Any idea at all of how long it might be before they are available? I was thinking of buying one but if I can't get reagents for six months I'm not going to.

it's hard to say, last time i bought the refill the retailer had 1000 of the 25 pack refills and they lasted several days, but some other vendors played games trying to sell out their stock of the low range testers before they would offer the high range and it sent people into a panic buying frenzy and the stockpiling ensued with people buying them out every chance someone restocks them.

they've also went from 9 bucks to 15 because of it.

some of us bought the reagents when they were available and have no issues with it.

Which doesn't help those who didn't stockpile, or those who are looking to buy the checker now.

I've emailed Hanna asking to send mine back for a refund, as it is no use without reagents, but they flat out ignored me. I have considered a credit card chargeback but that's not fair on the retailer, as it's not their fault.

My opinion of Hanna, and their flat-out refusal to answer any customer service enquiries, has permanently tarnished my opinion of them.

sigh up for the 'Notify Me' on several sites and maybe get ahead of some of the panic buyers when they restock.

I did that weeks ago but that doesn't work if Hanna isn't supplying the retailers.

Hanna are still quoting 4-6 weeks if you order direct from them, they take payment up-front even though they don't have anything to ship, and their shipping charges are just silly.

i understand your frustration, i didn't like the HUGE price increase on them, but i honestly can't fault Hanna for not refunding you on a unit you bought, used 10x and then feel you should be refunded. supply and demand have a huge setback for every manufacturer the last 2 yrs because of COVID supposedly........ i have customers complaining and giving me bad ratings because acrylic projects have doubled in price in the last year, but with EVERYONE in the world using acrylic sheeting for cough shields, it's made my cost go way up and extended delays in shipping of product to me.

plenty of low range kits and reagents available, but people are too lazy to do the dilution and complain about the number of steps........

Well I disagree; they sold me a product that they can't support; it was not sold to be used 10 times!

But even if you are right and I am wrong, can you fault them for not even replying to my email?

i'm sure they get thousands and thousands of emails from people of this same entitled mentality every day...... would you rather they take the time to answer all those or work on getting reagents to you??
