Hello everyone, I have a 20 gallon nano reef tank with a hob fluval filter. I was wondering what media both biological and mechanical you would recommend having in it?

What do you keep in your tank?

What are you looking to keep in your tank?

A lot depends on what type of tank you want to run.

In a nano tank you can really run it with nothing except a power head and airstone with a little live rock and sand.

It all depends on what way you want to go ;)

Gotcha, right now I have gsp, mushroom, rose tip anemone, 1 clown fish, and a yellow watchman goby pistol shrimp pair

A lot of people put a small nano skimmer on and fill the HOB filter with just bio filtration....could be live rock, sand, cheato, ceramic rings.

I dont have a nano so I really cant give first hand advice on what I use.

But many here do so I'm sure they will chime in!!

I would ditch the filter...get a good quality HOB skimmer...and a good wavemaker and you will be good to go...live rock takes care of all biological filtration...if you want to “polish” the water maybe once or twice a week run the Filter with some filter floss.

For about 4 years I had a standard 29 gallon with an AC70 running the sponge, a bag of Chemipure Elite and a bag of Purigen. Sponge was cleaned out weekly, Chemipure replaced everything 3 months and Purigen recharged when it started getting dark. This tank was a mixed reef from SPS to LPS to Zoas. Also had a cheap hob skimmer that skimmed when it wanted.

Did you have any issues with algae or phosphates and nitrates with that set up?
