might be easier to ask which skimmers suck :D as most people will recommend the skimmer they're using...I personally use a Lifereef vs2-24 and it does a fantastic job.

AquaMaxx especially when marine depot has a sale

I have the lifereef 24 as well but can't speak about the performance yet. I'm still inching closer to get my system wet

I agree with who ever said everyone will tell you get what that have. I have some belief that bubble king makes the best skimmers, but I've never even owned one. I've used a few reef octopus skimmers myself with success, so I guess I could recommend them as at least sufficient.

Better advice is size. I am of the opinion right sized, not grossly oversized for your system is the right approach. Size in the scenario being determined by tanks that hold livestock, not sumps etc. mine is actually a bit undersized for my display but I have a few other forms of filtration I rely on.

If it's in a cabinet under the tank be mindful of height so it's easy to get the collection cup out without spilling. Easy to get out if the sump to clean is really helpful as well

I wouldn't do aqua C. I had the ev-120 with mag 5,7 then ehiem. Hated that skimmer! Aquamaxx is my recommendation

My CO-1

My new Q3 1 day of use on a new tank with rocks that have cycled in a tub for a month.

These things rock! Ultrafine bubbles and pretty much set and forget

I'm a fan of Reef Octopus, I've had great results with my 150-int.

I had an RO 110-int on my old tank prior to my Aquamaxx CO-1. The RO was ok but Aquamaxx Sicce based pump makes it seem like night and day. I'd never go back to RO now.

I liked my Reef Octopus, but I love my Bubble King. I think the Vertex Skimmers should be close if not identical in terms of the materials used when compared to a Bubble King. They just feel so solid and well made!

A lot of this will also depend on your budget and how much space you have in your sump.

Bit off the OPs topic, but I've been thinking about upgrading to a BK from an RO. I want to go external with a DC pump and I'm trying decide between another RO or upgrade to BK. It's twice the cost so I'm curious what difference you are seeing between the two. Build quality seems like a given, especially between the pumps, but anything else worth noting in your experience?

The skimmer itself just seems to be made of much thicker material, the collect cup screws on and off, you can completely disassemble for cleaning...thats all I got on the spot.
