Hi. I'm gonna upgrade my in-sump return pump next month and want to plumped my carbon reactor, GFO reactpr, refugium to cut back some electricity. What kind of pump is good and quiet. Budget will not be a problem but looking to spend around 150.

plumb* not plump.

i did the same thing about4 months ago. now everything is running off one pump and a header system. I wouldnt bother doing this upgrade though unless you go with an external pump. much better bang for your buck. and less cleanup/maintenance. I went with a pan world (aka blueline) pump. very pleased.

i did have an eheim insump before. ill never have in sump again

What is the down size of using in-sump pump to run mutilple equipment?

Cost mostly (at least that's what I found when I was researching). I wanted something in the 1200-1300 gph range for my 120. I found that most in sumps at that gph are very expensive. So I opted for a pan world pump.

Second is maintenance in the fact that the pump gets dirtier quicker which can affect your gph quicker than with an external. Yes, all pumps need maintenance, but all my previous in sumps needed more tlc than my current external. (That could be a result of having higher gph, but not definitive either way) I got tired of needing sponges to protect the in sump impellers, and dealing with all the crap that may not be caught via the filter sock, or slime build up. I also "think" you get more gph per buck in the world of external pumps. I also believe (my opinion) that external pumps are more accurate in gph output ratings.

I switched to external while my tank was still running fyi. It's plausible and not difficult if you're setup correctly plumbing wise. I cut the flow to sump, cleaned out the sump thoroughly since I had it dried up and everything. Dropped at lfs to be drilled, and picked up two days later. viola piece of cake.

You can certainly do in sump and I'm not bashing them, they have their pros, I'm just glad I opted for external. And got more gph than I thought I would need.

Thanks for the info :-)

No problem. Pan world (blue line pumps) are the same as iwaki pumps. Just two brands from two different Japanese engineers who were buddies turned competitors. Pam world is a little cheaper. And have just as good reviews in short and over the long haul.

If you go insump eheim was always my favorite. Sicce is second. Eheim and sicce are very quiet and sturdy pumps. Mag drive always sucked a lot for me. I'll never buy mag supreme pumps again. Just garbage.
