I have a red sea max e 170 and looking to get a new return pump. I currently use compact on 2100 from Eheim. Suggestions?

Your tank will have a suggested flow that is needed, use that, buy a DC pump if you want it to be quiet, you could be lucky and go for an ac pump and it it quiet, some tanks are just not compatible with ac pumps, they vibrate noisily.

It is recommended to use a return pump with at flow of at least 2700 lph that is what my tank manufacturer said. I was looking At Varios 2 model but looking at this thread the return would be maxed out.

Happy with the current usa pumps, 6 years no issues. I have a spare i swap in every 6 months or so, and clean the one in use. Get one with 2x rated flow since youll have some head and pipe.

Why do you want to change? Eheim has always had a pretty solid reputation.

for one I think too small pump for my tank 555gph and thats without head loss am I correct? So I should be shooting for 1162gph (tank manufacturer recommends 713gph)? Also I like to use the 0-10v from my hydros to be able to control pump.

They have larger sizes in the same family. I dont know if they are controllable via dc reference.

700+ gph seems like a lot for a 45g tank. I feel like 4-5x turnover (180-225gph) would be more than enough for a return pump. Even 10x turnover would only be 450gph!

I do more than that for returns on an AiO tank, but for a sumped system I don't see the need.

My “cheap” Jebaos all run silent for 5 years now. Maybe the DCQ-5000 or so would work well and keep your $ in the bank

I agree.
