So I had a fuge section in my sump, but I wasn't getting any growth it if the chaeto, so I threw it out in the yard.

I hate filter socks, as they weren't easy to change due to the configuration of the sump (not my choice, got the setup for free).
So I came up with the below.

First chamber has rock and the drains, the next section has 14 filter pads for a pond filter sandwiched between some lighting diffuser. At the end of the pond filter pads, is one piece of fine filter pad to catch whatever particulate that makes it that far. Then skimmer, and added a bio pellet reactor. Then return pumps

Have had it set up for a little over a month, and it is going well. I only have to change the fine cloth once a week.

Here's some pics

Not the prettiest, but it works, and that's what I care about.

BRS did something similar with filter media baffles. They said it kept getting plugged up. If it’s working for you, that’s awesome.

I thought about it getting plugged up, and that's why I went with the pond filter pads. They're a little more coarse than the aquarium ones, allowing better flow through. I also made sure that if they were to clog completely, the water would still flow across the top of the pads and make it to the returns.

I think the major component is that I have a light stocking for my tank size. 9 fish, and only 3 medium size tangs in a 190g tank.
