Red and green light question on radions ....

I have a mixed reef and I have the radion gen 3pros.....I have seen so many different schedules, some running red and green high, some running those colors low, and some not running the red and greens at all....I'm just curious do you even need to run the red and greens for anemones, lps, and sps?? Or just a little bit or what's the real deal on these two colors?
 
All these new different new colors are suddenly coming out, but there isnt any proof that they help on growth or colors...for some corals..ive noticed a slight better look to them...but dont believe it helps w growth or coloration...just a better appearance

Thanks for writing....so really on my radions I'm good to go as long as I'm running the blue, royal blue, uv, and the white then
 
My point was..imo, as long as u are using a bit of all the spectrums..and most importantly..u get the pop/look u want out of your corals, you are good to go..wouldnt worry about benefits..because from my research....none of the new spectrums help really

What do you mean by using a bit of all the spectrums?? You mean like 12k, 14k 18k 20k?
 
I think red can cause algae issues... green I read an article that the author was trying to prove that green has more of a effect on growth than we think.

The two underlined comments above are very interesting. what are all the spectrums you suggest? and if the new ones are of no help, why would I want to use them? According to you, I need to use some of "all" spectrums.

Also, how much and what type of "research" have you done/conducted? Id be very interested in hearing the goals, parameters, and conclusions that came about from said research.
 
We need data!!

I've received corals from people using radion gen 2 pros and noticed the coloring up ability of the light is spectacular. I have begun switching over from other led brands to radions. Gen 3 pros would be "better" but I'm personally limited on funds. My thoughts are to add t5 supplement as well. My coral growth under my old lights are awesome but I'm after growth and color and not just growth.
 
My tank is SPS dominated;
I have 3 gen3 pro radions on it.
My lights max at 100% uv, 100% royal blue, 100% blue, 40% white, 40% green, 5% red.

I believe the green and red help a little, more so for color pop. The red for sure grows more algae when it's turned up high so I keep that low throughout the day. But I let the green go up to 40% and I see great growth for my tank.
 
Thanks for the Input Everyone! My thing is let me see research also!!! And I wish we had some because when I'm setting my radion schedule I just want to know what I actually need and don't need! I mean I know there are so many different types of tanks and definitely a lot of successful ones with different lift schedules! Some run red, some run green, some run both, some run both high, etc......but I just want to make sure my light schedule is good where the corals are getting what they need to be as happy/healthy as possible (I know a hundred other things help with keeping corals healthy and happy also but I'm just talking about lighting right now)
 
And if red does cause algae growth for a fact I would love to know how much red is too much because I definitely don't want that either!

I would just keep it low. Don't think I have ever seen anyone have it higher than 20% on leds but every led system is different. I have mine on 5% on ai primes which have 1 Red led on each. Don't think I have read anywhere that red really benefits much and I believe whites give off enough red on their own.

Yeah that makes sense for sure.....for example on the radions when you set it to 20k setting it has uv, royal blue and blues at 100% and the white, red and green are at 17%.....could you run that setting for 6 to 8 hours a day and it would be good enough spectrum for a mixed reef?? Sps, lps, anemones?

That's like the my AI primes on manufacturer settings... I put mine on 20k then turned down the red and uv some. It's going to come down to par measurements than kelvin temp. I run my lights for 8 hours, some do 10 and 12 hours.

This might be a dumb question but.....I know what par is, but does the different lighting colors (red, green, blues, etc.) affect what he par can read?? Or is the overall percent of brightness what dictates the par?

That's actually a great question and the answer is yes and no. With our units, for example, achieving 100 par with just red or green can't happen as there's just not enough of those leds. However, on my AI primes, whites will give me a higher par than deep blues even if set at same percentage because there are 4 white leds compared to only two deep blue leds. It's not about just having the correct par but more about having the correct spectrum and par.

Okay I see what you are saying....I mean my corals and stuff seem to be doing good....but really I should find someone with a par meter and check my tank out...I'm definitely gonna turn the Reds and greens down some also
 
Sorry to pony this thread..but i hqve a question re the new radions....considering purchasing them. Are there options for weather? I.e. a cloudy day or lightning storm?
