I just started noticing a rapid increase in the translucent maroon slime all over my live rock. (I thought it was corriline algea and was pretty impressed at the speed)

I do 20% water changed every 2-3wks, I just ordered more sand and live rock as well so I just want to make sure before it takes over my whole rock

Hard to tell from picture...most likely cyanobacteria. Is this a new tank? Check RO/DI water source.

Yes brand new tank and started cycling it about 8 months ago slowly added live sand and live rock, upgraded filter to include chemi blue elite filter media about a week ago. I've been using bottled RO water since it's only 13.5 gallons. I do have the blue/white on for about 8 hours and turn blue on for 8 hours, 8 hours off.

Cyanobacteria. I would buy an RO/DI unit and make your own water. The bottled RO probably has some nutrients in the water still that's fueling the cyano. By purchasing the RO, we have no idea how often they change/clean their filters etc. Good luck!

Thanks. That makes sense now. Would a 4 stage with DI be sufficient?
