red bugs

Hi Debbie Downer  - don't discount methods until you at least read the thread or try it out yourself. Simply stating something is stupid is a great way to sound (and look) narrowminded. No need for that on R2R - we get plenty of that on other forums.

FWIW, I've been fairly active in that thread (username flamron over "there"). I've done pretty extensive testing on AEFW with the Bayer. It is so effective on them, I'd wager a bet that it is effective on red bugs as well. I will say that interceptor works well, as long as you can easily get the crabs and shrimp out. But the Bayer insecticide offers a great alternative that really does work. And the nice thing about the Bayer is that it doesn't brown out SPS when dipped (for me anyways - YMMV). I also don't see the stress induced with interceptor.

I plan to actually treat with the Bayer in my QT tank once I get it up and running to give myself duplicates of all of coral. That way I can "nuke" my tank with Levimasole.

For AEFW, I use 1/2 cup of tank water to 10ml of Bayer for four-five minutes. Don't exceed this dosage or time. You may incur losses if you do so.

My two cents. One more thing - buying interceptor from another country is silly. Go to a few vets in your town or send them emails with links to several sites outlining the treatment of red bugs until you find one willing to give you an off-label prescription of it. There is no need to buy the stuff from a different continent. ;)

do you honestly think i didnt read the thread?
ive been watching it since it first came about.
reason being that there is 2 different products and many different doses in that thread.
ah yes then comes the old i thought i killed my acro, but the polyps were still there.
but either way i have never seen any stress from dosing interceptor properly!
silly huh its not silly as just incase you didnt notice that many vets wont give it to you and the price is pretty much the same.
did you ever happen to notice that at times many places dont have but one vet.

From your blanket statements of the treatments being "stupid", I was leaning towards no.

I've dipped thirty acros thus far. No stress and no deaths.

Interceptor always browned out my acros - but I'm sure I was doing it wrong.

And yes, I realize some local areas may be limited to vet services, but those people probably have cars, so perhaps they could drive an hour or two and get some? Just a thought.

Overall, your negativity is a bit baffling. Why so much of it in this thread? Are you a secret red bug proponent? ;)

whats stupid is that thread over there. way too much guessing and grabbing at straws.
hardly a red bug proponent. frankly im sick of seeing ppl who have them contiunally selling frags without reguard to saying they have them and they dont worry about them. its a process thats becoming more and more rampant.

And I just gave you a dosage that will work. I can get the one product I use if you need that as well. I'd hate to have anyone mix it up with the "other" one that people are crashing their tanks with.

that would actually be way better than the mixed up thread over there.

So trying new things to improve the hobby is stupid? K

It isn't like we have a panel of scientists that are constantly testing new treatments for what ails our hobby. Re only way we will make advancements is by doin the testing ourselves.

That's great that you want the hobby to make zero progression - how's your undergravel filter going? I know they still work, but skimmers are so much easier.

------

What I'd really like to see if everyone using proper QT methods (or any for that matter). IMO, it is the buyers responsibility to ensure the coral they are buying are pest free. And I must have missed the for sale part of this thread? How does that even come into play? Did the OP say he was tired of selling frags with pests in his original post? You seem to be mad about some red bug stuff - but I don't understand why you feel the need to call a new treatment stupid and berate the guy about using said treatment. Did you ever see the original interceptor threads? Plenty of guessing went on there.

i guess someone cannot read. how many more things do you want to put into my mouth. oh yea this is exactly why that other thread is that way.
i have read the original interceptor thread and then the other 8000 asking what was the actual dose that worked and which one because of the same thing in that thread.
if your following that thread so closely you would of answered all those questions at the end.
if the seller knowingly sells frags with pests without disclosing that how is that the buyers problem. it not eventually thats going to be the undoing to this hobby. just look at all the other imported animals that are banned due to pests. a buyers duty to to inspect the coral qt it and go from there.
i didnt berate anyone i berated a treatment that isnt even complete, but your so stuck upon that fact that you still didnt give that information just like in that other thread.

Well it worked. I'll not reply anymore, and I'll go back and delete my posts so that you can "help" everyone.

Good luck nixer - thanks for setting me straight. I hate being wrong...

so i was able to get some pills local… when doing the treatment why is it necessary for the skimmer to run with out the airline tubing? is it necessary to change the carbon after every treatment i'am using chemipure elite and it would be pretty expensive to change it out 3 times in 3 weeks

When I did my interceptor treatments {wrong obviously}, I didn't change out carbon, just water.

The skimmer will pull the meds out (to an extent) and/or your skimmer will go nuts with the meds.

yeah i don't want my skimmer to go crazy i wanted to just keep it off since i finally got it dialed in correctly.. can i just leave it off and dump watever water is sitting in it out when i do my water change?

interesting thread, w/ some interesting views...

its definately not productive knocking experimental methods and new thoughts... its what makes the hobby progress... unfortunately some peeps would rather knock someone for trying to find other succesful methods, than actually contribute...

however, interceptor gets my vote...

ok dosed the interceptor last night, woke up today put my carbon back in and fixed my tubing for my skimmer but now my skimmers not skimming at all the bubbles aren't even making it to the neck should i keep it off or let it run like that?

instead of pulling the airline on my skimmer I always just take the cup off and let it over flow back into my sump. That way my O2 levels do not take a hit from having the skimmer off for too long.

so i bought a bottle of the Bayer complete insecticide from walmart for $13 and i will be using it as a dip to kill the bed bugs on my acro's tonight. i hope with multiple dips i can get my red bugs under control. i will also be adding a Christmas wrasse as i have read that they will eat red bugs. After googling for (other red bug options) and reading the thread i am confident that this will work as a dip only. but this is what i will be using http://www.lowes.com/pd_101308-24182-700280_0__?productId=3005441&Ntt=bayer&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dbayer&facetInfo=and for $13 i can wage war on red bugs and aefw for years to come with only one bottle and this will be used on any new corals that i buy especially ones from the frag swap as i believe that's where i got my red bugs. but
