At what point do I get concerned that the wrasse isn’t hiding and died? We picked up a good sized red coris wrasse from our fish store on Sunday. We saw him for a little bit before he disappeared into the tray of sand we put in the QT tank for him. I don’t want to dig down for him and further stress him out but I also don’t want to just leave him there if he happened to have died since we have no cuc in that tank. I’m not overly concerned right now because we have a melanarus that did something similar and reappeared about 36 hours later.

you're fine i bet. ive had a wrasse hide for a month before. usually they are out when you arent looking. what other fish are in the tank? there could be bullying.

You should be alright for now. As said above, sand sleeping wrasses can hide for several months, it’s not unheard of for a sand sleeper to hide for 8+ weeks. However it is uncommon for them to do this.

It's probably out and your not noticing. Give it up to a month. Usually within a week you will randomly see it and it will develop a time schedule, if healthy and happy.

My red coris still hides on occasion during lights on hours and will just randomly appear as if nothing happened like clock work after a few days.

Don't worry about your wrasse dying in the sand because it's unlikely. When a wrasse is dying it usually has labored breathing, it's hard to breathe like that in sand so they come out of the sand to die.

A few days of hiding is pretty common. Your wrasse will make an appearance once it feels secure in its new surroundings.

Guess the wrasse just wanted me to talk about him some get home from taking my dog on a therapy visit to host a reading program at an elementary school and he’s just out swimming around like he had no cares in the world. Which I’m glad is the case and that we didn’t just toss out over $100….yet

Glad he's out now :) There's a thread on here dedicated to wrasses, check it out (and post more pics of him).

This. Over there, photos are everything :)
And if you want to go for a wrasse but are conscious about it, I’m sure we’ll enable you to do it.
