Upgraded my tank that had been up for a year about a 5 weeks ago. Going from an old Red Sea Max 250 to a RSR 450. When I upgraded I hard plumbed in two reactors, one for GFO and one for Bio-Pellets. I started BIO Pellets the day that my new tank went online. Along with Rowa Phos. After 3 weeks of running Rowa Phos I took the reactor off line because I could not keep detectable levels of phosphate in the tank. My current parameters look like this.

Mixed Reef

Salinity 1.026
No3 3-5
Po4 .02
ALK 8.5
Calcium 450
Magnesium 1370

My Flow is great and tank turn over is 6-8 times an hour.

So now we come to the issue. All of a sudden I have noticed Red Cyano on the rocks, a tiny bit on the sand, and some on my corals. Last night I used a turkey baster and blew off all of the corals (which it came right off). I want to stop this before It becomes a major issue. I honestly don't keep a monster CUC but they have always been sufficient enough to keep the tank clean.

So here is where I need help.

1. Why would I be getting this when my levels are all exactly where I want them?

2. I have read online that some people claim that bio-pellets can do this, but I find it hard to believe thats the cause right now.. however I have not dosed any bacteria to the tank, and have read sporadically that it is important to do when running bio pellets. Any info hear would be appreciated

3. What's the best way to stop this now before it gets out of hand?

4. Is this just a new tank ugly that will go away?

Crucial to get those phosphates up and nitrates as well. I just feed my fish a bit more, change filter socks and stir the sand everyday.

Not sure why your getting cyano all of the sudden but I struggled with it for years, so frustrating. Finally I picked up some chemiclean (I always avoided it as it seems like a chemical band aid) and havent had any cyano in a couple of months! That stuff is magic!

Hey my chemiclean is arriving tmr did you follow instructions any tips ?

Ya I just followed instructions. But it was unclear about the skimmer so after a bunch of research I left my skimmer on but pulled the cup off and just let it drain into the tank.

When I get cyano it usually means my rodi filters need changed. Don’t know why but it always worked. I’ll trade you my aptasia for your cyano any day.
