I have just a little red cyno on one of my rocks (got the rock from the LFS which had cyno on it) which I have had for a while now and it isn't really spreading, just staying confined to the one area on the left hand side of the tank.
I didn't try to get rid of it cause I like the colour it adds, and I don't have corals so it wont be affecting much.

I cant find any real information stating it is bad for water quality. Just unsightly and can suffocate algae's/corals.
If the cyno is consuming nutrients in the water, wouldn't this make it beneficial for water quality? Like instead of having macro algae's I could just keep the cyno and let it use up excess nutrients?

Cyano is a bacteria and can quickly emerge into a nightmare smothering the zooanthelle and light which coral need for food source and survival.
It’s generally a sign of poor water quality or poor filtration or skimming

My water is quite good which explains why it wont grow or spread in my tank. It stays the same as how I got it from the LFS months ago.
I don't have corals, and I don't have much interest in getting them.
It appears that there is no negative to cyno then if you don't have corals?

Suck it out with a baster, if it spreads, it will be a pain to get rid of later on.
But why would I want to get rid of it if I dont have corals? If the cyno is consuming nutrients in the water, wouldn't this make it beneficial for water quality? Like instead of having macro algae's I could just keep the cyno and let it use up excess nutrients?

If left untreated it will quickly become thicker, even stringy looking, can have little bubbles trapped in it & carpet your sand, and rocks . Cyano is super toxic and has the ability to not only kill corals, but also fish & inverts!
Yeah, it may look pretty but does have adverse effects.

thanks. So these cyano toxins from the cyanobacteria are released into the water? Or only toxic if eaten?

They are released into the system

It’s bad get rid of it.
I have an issue with it now (with good water quality and flow). If your tank has any sunlight like mine it can become a issue. Why take the chance

No coral? What? Why? Macro maybe?

No I meant the Cyano has all vanished haha. Mushroom corals, anemones and macros all still doing fine.
