After 7 months and starting as just a single 1/2” stick it started to STN on me :( I’ve read it is one of the more temperamental sps on some sites and others say it’s easy. Once I saw the STN start last night I split it up on 4 different frag plugs. Each one is now stn about half way up from the bottom. The only thing I can think what may have ticked it off was a 10% water change on Friday. Nothing done differently, all perameters in check as always. The only thing different was the water was 2 degrees f. cooler but that’s never been an issue before. No other frag in the tank is affected. Ah well goodbye, I’ll try another some day.

It happens, sounds like you got the right attitude, its not the end of the world, ya it sucks but its just part of reef keeping.

Red Dragon has always been a finicky coral for me. My previous piece had some algae that got wrapped around it at the base and caused it to STN. This one is just like Hawkins for me, will do really well for months and suddenly go downhill.

It is both temperamental and/or easy, depending on the reefer. It grows like a weed for me and I often have way too much of it. On the other hand, I have had people come and get frags from the 4-5 times because they just get it going and then it RTNs on them.

I keep my alk super stable with a CaRx and even though it can drift from 6.8 to 7.5, it takes a month to do so in between tuning. I am a bit lax on my water changes too.. if salinity is correct, then I am OK with the temp being "close enough." I do not think that the temp hurt you at all.

Here is some neat info... I believe it may like dirtier water. I have two, one in my 300g which runs way too clean sometimes. I have a lot of $ and 75 acros tied into the tank so I test everything almost daily. Well the red dragon dies off a lot in the large system. I have a 65g upstairs with no sump, it grows like a weed and never STN. It’s a soft coral tank I don’t test anything and all I run is Kalk. Crazy

I have always talked smack about this coral though as it is very finicky. I had to re buy it several times also. I hope now with the smaller tank growing it well I can just get the frags from there
