Not just one of my favorites but according to my guests, some of whom barely know a coral from a Corvette, say it's one of their favorites also. And with the sale of frags resulting in it paying for itself many times over, I wouldn't mind if they were $1000.00.

The reason all the frag pics you see are all light colored.. maybe because they were just fraged? RD is kinda a hard coral to frag they are very brittle. I have seen some get fraged and in a day all the tissue has just come right off the skeleton. hard to frag but once established they grow like a weed

When they are healthy they are no problem to frag I have fragged probably 500 frags of RD. Its hardy and grows like weeds under right conditions. Up here in Canada where the original piece came from its going for 20 a 1 inch frag lolol
Mine is very deep red, below is some progression pics. The lasting is bad, I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow. Give or take a couple weeks in each month.

I didn't think much of the RD the first time I saw it in my friends tank because it had that washed out pink look. I ended up with a frag that came in a pack and planned to dump it but as it started to grow I really got to like it due to it's growth and color.
It's a deep red in my T5 tank with tips that are bright like the blue flame on a torch, and you can't beat the beauty of it's growth pattern. I think there's also a lot of different versions out there, some more red than others. Mine was a CITR Red Dragon from a reliable source for what it's worth.
Light intensity can also be a factor..................mine is at the bottom of my tank at the 250 par level.
Having said all that, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for a single branch piece. Around $45 max for a multi branched piece in the 1 1/4"- 1/2" range. Imo, it's the green slimeer of this decade.................will always be a desirable beauty with a nice price tag over the years.

I have a good sized frag of it 2.5" inches with like 5 branches but it is a lighter pinkish color not deep red. Any thoughts? I have it at the bottom of the tank. Lights are T5's...

It's one of my favorites too. I bought mine from CITR about the time Tyree added it as a LE. Paid the price but it was worth it to me as the growth pattern - at least at the time- was unique.

The market has been flooded with imposter red dragons that are either wild or maricultured. Most of these have the same growth structure but the color pales in comparison to the original aquacultured "CITR Red Dragon".
That said, the market value of a CITR red dragon is much lower now because it grows quickly and more and more people are growing it and selling it. It happens with every popular AC coral. As supply increases, the value drops.
So be careful when shopping for a red dragon, most of the "red dragons" out there are not as nice as the original. It's a shame that people are using names of aquacultured corals to sell wild and maricultured stuff just because they are the same species.

you obviously dont have one.... these acros are very nice deep red with blue tips and white polyps it is a very nice acro! I like mille but the red dragon was a must have!
another thing that pushes up the price is it is my experience a sensitive acro. seems everyone that I talk to kills or almost kills the first frag they get... they are sensitive to dips excreta..... once established they take off and grow like a weed but the trick is to get it established in your tank.
my frag came from reefers cove so I know its a "real" red dragon.the first frag I got died in shipping and when I sell a frag I cut 2 because the person I sell it to always kills the first frag in the first day or two (almost always from dipping)

Red dragon is a must have for sps collectors, but I might be biased since "deep water" bottle brush or dragon type acros are my favorite. Awesome deep red color that is pretty much unique to this coral, with bluish tips and an awesome growth structure...and nothing better then a beautifully colored coral that grows fast, and this bad boy grows. Mine is a "true" citr red dragon but some of my polyps are pink and some are white...and I did kill my first frag but I think it was because it was a tiny quarter inch nub with like 4 coralites. I agree with you, like other "delicate" acros this one shouldn't be dipped, and when dipped the solution needs to be heavily diluted. It got through a interceptor treatment with no issues though.
