ok i got this 4-5" red hadonni for a few weeks, and he seems to be healthy eating mysis and tiny bits of shrimp, but sometimes he shrinks really small to about a silver dollar or smaller at times...,and the mouth gaps a lot....anyone experience this much of a size fluctuation and gapping?:squigglemouth:

temp pretty stable around 74-76...everything else doing well, and no new additions....

In my experience these are signs of a size or dying carpet. My blue did the same thing before it died

^^^ :cry:i hope its not... its responsive to light and feeding and is still very "sticky"...and when its expanded the mouth isnt gapped at all...

ah maybe we gotta put him in my tank. no good your tank. hehehehe:hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer:

thanks wicked, i hope so!!.... ^^^^^ hahaha nice try mr. acan!:beat_shot:

how often do you feed him? some like to feed them directly, but i am a believer of not feeding them directly. if you feed mysis or cyclops he will eat that from the water column that way, but they get most of their nutrients from light.
i read way too many horror stories of fedding nems, they they die the next day and crashing tanks. i had a rbta for over a year now and it split once when it was about 12", then it split again at 8". now the 3rd i have left is now 8" again..never directly feed mine and its in a 24g nano with a 150mh.

i feed my nems twice a week but i didnt feed him for about a week as to let it get use to the new tank. but after watching it for a while and really nothing for me to really do but just watch it melt i had to remove it...

I've had a red carpet for a couple of years. Every few months it does a similar thing. Lasts for a week or two. Never noticed an association with temp, light or chemical parameter changes.

wait a sec, so it melted?!
that sucks, i had an orange carpet that did great until i moved and there were huge temp swings
it was a tiny one too, i think it was around 4" when fully expanded
it was under 2x150mh 4x39w t5's
but the mh were only on for about 4 hours a day and the t5s were on for 12 hours

had him for over a year, and then the dreaded move...
