I had a very major outbreak of red planaria flatworms and tried a few methods to control them. I introduced blue velvet nudis, which worked except they kept getting stuck in my powerheads even with them set on the lowest setting and having protective covers on them.
Moved on to manually removing them, I found by killing the lights and only allowing a small amount of light to hit a particular part of the tank I could attract them to that spot and siphon them out. I made a filter cup by drilling a plastic cup and putting filter floss in it to catch them as water passed through. This certainly helped reduce the numbers but they kept coming back heavily.
Enter the Scooter Blenny, I added two little ones to my tank and have seen a DRAMATIC decrease in the flatworms. They seem quite eager to have them for dinner and frankly if I can get to a balance where they have enough to eat and I don’t have a crazy amount of worms then we’re golden.
