Red Rash on Torch base

Anyone have any idea what this rash looking thing on my torches base is? I picked it up from the store a couple hours ago and didn't notice till I was about to add it to the tank

Not sure what that is. It's very orange.

I want to say it's a sponge, can you scrape some of easily?

That's a cute dolphin

It's very squishy. I was poking around trying to figure out what it was and I noticed that some pieces of its skeleton chipped off and underneath it was a similar color but darker orange. I think it might be the flesh underneath the skeleton. I know that the guys at my LFS cut it from a larger colony a couple days ago so it might be from that? Could it get infected from this?
