I have a red sea 170. Everything is good however I would really like to have a refugium. I'm looking to upgrade my sump that has one built in.

Has anyone upgraded their yet?

So far found a trigger systems cube and a Bashsea cub.

Looking to see if anyone has any suggestions.

Yes, I did a refugium and skimmer section in my 170 sump. Had to ditch the filter sock.

Do you have a skimmer, are you going to run one?

There’s several ways to run a refugium, just depends upon the whole picture.... how big of a refugium, skimmer, stock ato or aftermarket.

I stayed with the stock sump and ATO

I have the stock sump. With a skimmer in it. I don't like now the water comes into the sump seems like a waster of space and that section get dirty. I'm going to be using different ATO container so not worried about the ATO.

I'll take a pic and post it of my current layout.

I have the stock sump. Ended up with a skimmer, mesh sock, Tonga branch and SM scrubber. Working out well.

This my RSR 170 sump:

The Tunze 9004 fits in the overflow chamber.

Their sump seems ridiculously small for such a tank, kinda of amazing you can pull that off in such a limited spaces

Here is what I have now. The skimmer came with the tank when I got it. I feel like it's a little big for the tank but I'm not sure.

What's in the egg create?

I see you turned your ato into a refugium... Was it hard?
had extra space in the sump so I designed a little rubble rock cradle to house all my extra rock, rock in the display very minimal so more surface area is key. Also added legs on the bottom so detritus cant get clogged underneath.

drilling the ATO was a breeze. I used 1/2 bulk heads, I also recorded the process of setting up the ATO fuge!

Just watched your video. Really good idea with the refugium running into the filter cup.

It looks like you have more room in your than me lol. I think my skimmer is bigger that is my problem.

I think I'm gonna try to do this maybe this weekend. Did you have any problem with the pump for the refugium filling it faster than it drains?

Thank you!!
Nope pump will not pump faster than the refugium can drain. Only reason I have a valve on the pump is to turn down how much water comes in because too much inflow will cause the standpipe to suck an extreme amount of air and create a HUGE gurgle. If I could do it again I would make the stand pipe 1inch
