Red Sea 350 New Build - sort of

This is not exactly a new build but I basically have to start over after killing most everything in my tank. This first post is the story of how I got in this predicament.

I bought a Red Sea Reefer 350 about three years ago. My intention was to take my 7-year-old daughter to the local pet store to buy her a goldfish tank, and somehow we ended up walking out with a 75 gallon reef tank. These things happen I guess. Here’s a picture of the tank after 1 year:

Not impressive compared to other tanks I’ve seen here, but we enjoyed it. Mostly fish, a few corals, and a crazy BTA population. We bought one, and it split, and split and split. Sent a dozen BTA’s to the fish store to get rid of them, a few months later there were again a dozen in the tank. So if Fish + Bubble Tip Anemones = Mixed Reef, you could say we had a mixed reef tank.

The LFS had been doing all of the tank service including water changes. That’s really how I thought it was going to be since I viewed the aquarium as more of a decoration than a hobby.

Fast forward almost 2 years to December 2019. Tank is muddling along OK. Some of the corals have done very well (hammers, zoas) others looked great for a few months and then died off. Didn’t know much so that was a bit frustrating but maybe just par for the course. However I came to an important realization one day: Green Star Polyps are weeds. The patch in the first photo had grown to infest every rock and surface in the tank. Basically where there were no anemones there was Green Star Polyp, and where there was no Green Star Polyp there were anemones. This could continue no longer, so for the first time I prepared for battle inside the tank.

It took weeks, but eventually I had scrubbed every surface clear of GSP save for one rock of it that I isolated to an island. Since I removed some rock to do so, my daughter convinced me to buy a broken urn as a tank decoration to replace it. Though there was some coral loss, basically things look OK:

Two months later in March 2020, COVID-19 hits. Fish store closes and tank maintenance service is no longer possible. OK, it looks like I am learning how to do water changes. Maybe I can adjust the settings on the AI Hydra 26 lights too. One button press and Zap! one of the two lights dies. Great. Fish store closed. AquaIllumination is closed. Amazon is taking three weeks to deliver items that used to take two days. Long story short, half the tank is without light for two weeks, roughly. Half the corals die.

New light installed. OK things are looking up. Time for the next water change. Not a big deal since I figured out how to do it last time. Upon starting up the system again I try playing with the settings on the gyre pump controller. No response. Dead. Really? How long has it been dead for? I’m not sure, I never really paid attention to it before. Same situation as with the lights: stores closed, deliveries delayed. Find a replacement gyre pump on eBay that arrives a week later. More stuff dead.

Did a broken gyre pump actually cause the die-off? I guess so, but how to know? I do a water test. Nitrates and phosphorus a bit high, but they have always been high. Ammonia etc., are fine. Decide to check salinity a few days later. 1.020. What? It had been 1.026-1.028 consistently since tank install. How could that have happened? Looks like someone screwed up the last couple water changes. More stuff dead.

At least nothing else could go wrong. Well, my heater was not working properly. Temp was stable at 78. Now a little low at 77. A couple days later 76. Manually turn up heater a few degrees to try to keep temperature up. Couple days later, 74. Turn up heater again. Couple days later, 72. Turn up … wait, 72 is below the room temperature. How could that be? Oh, wait. Tank thermometer reads 68 now. Are you kidding me? Thermometer was slowly dying, not the heater. Actual tank temperature now about 83. Last two corals, once beautiful hammers, are half covered in brown jelly. Nice.

Alright, looks like reef keeping just became my COVID-19 hobby. Started doing research. Discovered Reef2Reef. Found incredible amount of helpful, useful, and completely contradictory information. Gave up in despair. Insert a couple days of self-pity. Put on big-boy pants and went back on Reef2Reef. Learned a lot and decided there is quite a bit about reef-keeping that just isn’t easy. Tossed fish-store ATI tests and bought Hanna and Nyos kits. Learned about water chemistry, carbon dosing, and Phosguard. Learned about fragging and for the first time I took a bandsaw to a living thing and tried to cut away the heads with brown jelly. Bought frag racks, frag plugs, and about 100 tubes of Super Glue later learned how to glue animals to rocks.

Tank looks like a war zone, but at least it is stable. Time to start over. Will post progress pictures tomorrow. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to Reef2Reef! (Though it looks like you've been up and running on here for a little while) I look forward to seeing your progress. It looks and sounds like you're a fast learner.
 
I am setting up a 350 now (waiting for a stand since the movers broke ours). I will keep an eye on your thread on e i get my new stand and start getting the tank cycled.

Today was a big day in terms of tank cleanup. I'll post a photo tomorrow after the dust settles (literally).

Here is one of those things I learned about on Reef2Reef and recently added to my tank:

After reading some stories about stray voltage possibly being responsible for mysterious fish or coral death, I measured the voltage in my tank. I connected one end of a multimeter to the ground plug of a wall socket, and the other end to the water in the sump. I turned off all of the electrical equipment and turned things on one by one. I measured no DC voltage at all, but did measure significant AC voltage.

Nothing + 6.2 V
Skimmer + 3.9 V
Main pump + 7.2 V
Gyre + 0.0 V
Lights + 0.3 V
UV Lamp + 6.9 V
Heater +7.0 V

So a total of 25.3 V AC, not including the initial 6.2 V offset. I don’t know if this is really dangerous to the tank inhabitants or not, but it doesn’t sound ideal. A grounding plug is cheap insurance. As soon as I inserted this one in the sump, the AC voltage dropped to zero. One less thing to worry about, I suppose.

The three islands design is inspired by @New&no clue in the thread here. I'm hoping to do different color zoas on the rock on the left, and different colored hammer corals on the island on the right. Before buying anything more though I want to put together a plan for coral color and placement.

Feel free to comment or provide suggestions on the aquascape. It will be far easier to fix things now rather than later!
 
Here is the plan for populating with corals. I'm trying to be quite deliberate about it, but I know that I might have to change plans based on how the corals do.

I just placed two zoas today. They have been in the frag rack on the left for a couple weeks and seem to be doing OK. I also have a frogspawn and a hammer coral waiting up there. They should go in place this weekend. Then I might wait a bit until the water parameters improve a bit. I need to get alkalinity and phosphates down.
 
It's been a tough week for the tank. Mounting the zoas and frogspawn went well. But the skimmer started overflowing, presumably due to the JB WaterWeld epoxy I used to mount the corals. I tried turning it down as far as I could but the cup would still fill up in less than five minutes. I had to turn it off, and it took five days before I could turn it back on again. Probably built up a fair bit of yuck in the tank during that time.

It was time to replace some fish, so I bought a Yellow Tang and a Red Fin Fairy Wrasse from a not-so-local fish store that I had never been to before. They looked beautiful in the store and paid a hefty price for them. About a week later I woke up to find the Yellow Tang covered with white spots. Presumably Ich or a related disease. After some research and with help from the Reef2Reef community I put together a hospital tank and moved Yellow Tang over to isolate him. I'll post a picture of the hospital tank soon.

Catching the Yellow Tang was quite an adventure. I needed to take apart half my rockwork to get him. I must say, I was real close to giving up at one point, but I think I tired him out. Not a great thing to do to a sick fish I'm sure, but what else can you do?

Today the Red Fin Fairy Wrasse was out. Mostly he has been hiding under a rock. He was swimming in a very odd way, kind of like his back half was paralyzed. Unfortunately it appears that spinal injuries are actually somewhat common in wrasses, who knew? I doubt there is much that can be done for him. I moved him over to the new hospital tank in hopes that a quiet environment might give him a chance.
 
New fish are always an adventure, sorry yours our sick. Hopefully a little TLC will get them better and back in the tank. My skimmer use to always goes crazy when I use epoxy. Now I mount my corals the same day as a water change. I mount them, then do a 10-15% water change and my skimmer is good.
 
Happy to see that you didn’t throw in the towel! Sorry to hear about your Tang and wrasse though. :( You have done some great work bringing your tank back to life with the maintenance needed and the coral Location plan looks spot on. I’m following along.

I feel your pain. This hobby is definitely not for the faint hearted. Lots of stuff to learn,lots of time to sacrifice! It seems that you are definitely making progress and I'm sure I'm not the only one applauding your efforts. With every mistake there's a lesson learned. Good news and bad news.

Bad news first. Red Fin Fairy Wrasse is no longer with us. I'm not sure what was wrong with him, but he was lying upside down on the bottom of the hospital tank for 4 days. Two freshwater dips and two dips in Paraguard did seem to wake him up a bit, but it was too little too late I'm afraid. RIP.

On to the good news. After almost a week in the hospital tank. Yellow Tang appears to be doing better. No more spots, or at least nothing obvious. He is eating. I plan to leave him in the hospital tank for 28 days. He looks kind of bored though, since there's nothing to pick at in the tank. Do they make fish toys?

10 Gallon Tetra aquarium with lid and LED lights
HOB filter with sponge and a sock for carbon (removed the carbon while using medicine)
200 W Eheim heater (way too big but I had a spare)
Airstone, airline, check valve, and 10G air pump
Thermometer
4" PVC Tee fitting for hiding

The water level is deliberately a little low so the return from the filter breaks the water surface to aid in aeration.
 
Things are looking up! Tank is stabilizing. Calcium and alkalinity are back to recommended values. I started testing magnesium, and I am bringing it up. But I am still struggling to reduce phosphates. I put more than the recommended amount of Phosguard in the sump, but I can't get the level to drop below 0.5 ppm even after several weeks. I verified against two different test kits so testing is not the problem. I ordered some Rowaphos and I will try that next. Promised myself I would not get any new corals until the phosphate level is reduced. So no new pictures, tank looks the same as above.

On another positive note I've kept the Yellow Tang alive in his hospital tank for almost a month. Actually the best thing I have done I think was to remove all of the medicine from his tank. He was very sluggish and not eating for over a week. So I did basically a 100% water change and removed all of the Cupramine. Also lowered salinity by a lot (slowly). Now feeding frozen brine shrimp soaked in Garlic Guard and he is gobbling it up!
 
Following along. Your doing a great job. Glad the tang is doing better. Sorry to hear about the wrasse. I lost a wrasse recently so i do know how it feels. It stinks. Did the tang make it for 30 days in the qt with the copper at therapeutic levels? Also we’re you going to run the display tank fallow for at least 76 days to make sure the ich is eradicated or manage it if it pops up again? Whatever you choose best of luck!
 
All the other fish in the display tank appear fine, but as a precaution I treated it with Ruby Reef Rally for 3 days after removing the Yellow Tang. I have some Rid-Ich as well, but I probably won't use it unless I observe some issue.

I pretty sure the Tang would not have survived 30 days in copper. During one week of treatment he had almost completely stopped swimming and didn't eat at all. As soon as I removed the copper he perked up and began eating again. Maybe he is allergic to Cupramine? I'm keeping him under hyposalinity conditions to try to prevent any remaining ich from flourishing. Seems like trying to find a set of conditions that will kill ich before killing your fish is not always straightforward.
