Hello all! I am new to the forum and new to the saltwater community. I have been a long time lurker on this forum and have been interested in starting a reef tank. Initially, I was planning on using an extra 20H I had lying around and buying things separately to piece together a decent setup. On facebook marketplace this morning, I found an ad for a Red Sea 65 gallon tank with everything included listed for $240. I have heard good things about these tanks and it seems like I would probably be spending about the same amount to get the 20H running. Bigger is better, right? The seller said that he was unsure if it was a Red Sea reefer or max but from my research, it seems to be a reefer because the display tank is 3ft long. Other than that I have no idea. The stand has the textured front instead of the flat front if that helps at all.

I am just wanting to get your input on this tank and see what you guys thought. I know I will have to replace the lights but he said all the filtration stuff is there. Is this a good deal for this tank? Is there anything to look out for on the older Red Sea tanks?

Hello, and welcome to R2R! If that tank is in good condition, and there is nothing wrong with it, that is a very good deal. 65 gallons would either be the Reefer 250, or a Max 250. If it is a Reefer, it is going to have all of the filtration and stuff under the tank in a sump. If it is a max, all of the filtration will be in the back of the tank. I haven’t heard of any problems with older Red Seas. I have the Red Sea Reefer 425xl, and I am very satisfied with it. Do you have a picture of it you could post?

Thank you! That helps a lot in identifying the tank! I'm not able to see the filtration in the picture but I am going to look at it tomorrow! Here's the only picture of the tank I have at the moment.

I went and looked at the tank yesterday. It seemed to be in pretty good condition. Thanks to ChaseB143, I was able to tell that this was a Max and not a reefer. The only thing I noticed was that the lights were not working like the seller said. The fans in the hood also would not turn on so I am not sure if there is a loose wire or maybe a bad relay or fuse in the hood. The seller was including a test kit and varius other things he had for the tank.
