I would not assume, and do not think you should assume that macroalgae will get you to ULNS. It usually does not.

I used lots of methods, including macroalgae, skimming, GFO, GAC, and organic carbon dosing, and still had 0.033 ppm phosphate in a Triton test (I didn't usually monitor it).

FWIW, ULNS systems are rapidly becoming less popular than they were a year or two ago, since folks with such systems now often see improvements when dosing such systems with nitrate or phosphate or both.

Randy, I agree with you and I will be running my system as close to ULNS as I can possibly get. Any other advice you have?
