ok question. i mixed 25 gallons up with rodi water last night and this morning there was like a fine powder all over inside the tupperware rubbishcan (cleaned of course before mixed). running a powerhead and airstone while mixing. is that normal? this is the first time i'm going to try salt mix instead of filtered seawater. oh: i don't need anymore problems (as you can see with my alk issues in my other thread, ready to give up the ghost on SPS)

hmm I use red sea coral pro salt and I have never noticed this happen with mine. Did you roll the bucket on the floor a bit to mix? Sometimes stuff settles in shipping. Just a thought, although I admittedly did not do this myself. I would run water tests on the new water to see if everything is good.

You're welcome. Sometimes it's worse than others. Really don't know why. Same bucket, and I always roll it around to mix it up, and it differs. One time it was completely cloudy. Mixed for 3 days and cloudy. I tested the gamet on it and all checked out. Did the change on the tank and the water in the display was so cloudy I could barely see through it. Cleared up in a few hours and no coral seemed even upset at the water change. I was baffled. No harm no foul I guess

I've use it to. And that's not the only salt that does this. I believe it's the buffer in the salt mix that don't Total dissolve in the water. It will happens when I added buffer to the mix to bring up alk. It should be alright if everything is healthy.

I just used two buckets of Seachem reef salt and it was the same way. I really didnt care for it it at all. I loved the Tropic Marin Bio-actif (sp). It looked great in my tank, just hurts the wallet.

thanks guys, the water is actually clear, just the sides and bottom of the trashcan is powder coated. lol. so when i do the wc should i "wipe" all the powder off and make it milky or leave it and just use the clear water?

its not the buffer its trace stuff left over from the collection process.
if you use a stronger pump for mixing its not as bad.
also dont let it sit around if i remember right its good to use after a couple of hours. the longer it sits the more of that stuff collects

I made a fifty gal batch and it had a red residue on the side of the barrell. I don't like it very much.

I got brown residue around the bucket with Red Sea Pro. It's annoying but so far my corals don't notice when I switched from IO.

I often have brown residue when using red sea salt, I use the standard version for lower alk. I have had the same thing with IO and thought my mixing can was leaching something.

no red here. but there was a buildup after 3 days stirring. alk 8dkh, ca 460 but when i did a test the day after mixing alk was at 11. quite a bit of precipitation on the inside of the barrel and on my pump when i finally did my w/c .
