Hi im funding for my upgrade. I would like to know what skimmer and return pump do i need for a red sea 350. Going for an sps dominant tank? And for a powerhead will a gyre 1k enough for it or 2 is alright? Thanks

What’s your budget?

For return pumps, I am not a fan of DC pumps. Call me old school but I prefer the reliability of AC pumps. For a Reefer 350 take a look at Sicce’s new line of AC pumps, the ADV series. I run a valved back ADV 5.5 and it’s very quiet and pulling a mere 32 watts. I think this pump will do fine for a Reefer 350 as RS Reefer tanks only have a single 3/4” or 5/8” (I can’t remember which) return outlet.

If you’re planning on a full SPS tank, I’d look at something bigger than an IceCap Gyre 1k. If you’re into gyre style pumps, look at getting 2 Maxspect Gyre 330s. You can get a second IceCap Gyre 1k I suppose, but you’ll have to run it at max power and as your frags mature into colonies, I think even a pair of 1ks may be under gunned.

Skimmer will totally depend on your budget. Size wise, I think any 5” body diameter skimmer would work. I’m a big Lifereef fan and if your budget was not an issue, a 24” Lifereef paired with an energy efficient Sicce ADV 7 pump would be amazing. It’s not an inexpensive option obviously.

Again, let us know your budget constraints so we can be more helpful in potential recommendations.

Welcome to the Rea Sea Reefer club!! I have a 250 and I currently run a Nyos 120 and a Vectra S2. Both are top brands but I would consider the next step up for both. The Nyos 160 and the Vectra M2. If you don't want to go with Ecotech then the Reed Octopus Varios-6 seems be be another popular option.

I am also contemplating on adding a Icecap Gyre to my tank along with my Mp40. I have to turn the 40 way down so not sure.

For the budget im not so sure how much but somewhat economical let say... im looking for stuff and gathering them as i build the tank. Im coming from a nano tanks so im not so sure about the big skimmer game yet.

For a tank of your size, the Reef Octopus Classic 150 INT has a very good reputation and won’t break the bank. You may also want to scan the classifieds as there are many good deals to be had on used equipment. I scored my Deltec SCA 1351 for literally peanuts in the secondary market. If you can find one, it’d be an absolute beast on your tank.

;Drool ;Drool ;Drool ;Drool ;Drool ;Drool ;Drool ;Drool I'll second this recommendation, a skimmer that will last for life. Worth every penny I spent on mine, and good for even larger tanks than the 350 if you decide to upgrade again in the future.
