Can anyone explain the reason for this to me?

The tank is a Red Sea max E-170 with the in cabinet sump upgrade. I bought the setup used and didn’t get the plug.

The instructions say to remove the plug when adding the in cabinet sump.

Problem is, removing the plug increases the flow requirement to keep the tank water level up. It’s a 37 gallon display and my return is running about 1050gph. Without the large turnover, the water level would never make it to the overflow and it would just circulate through the grill.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t try to get a replacement and plug it?

I have the same system. I have a Sicce 3.0 (715gph) running my sump. Sicce 1.5 running the on the grill side. I have had no problems keeping up the water level.

The grill is let water pass through for the recirculating pump on the right side of the tank( in the rear chamber) The main sump return pump will be on the left side on a E-170. When looking at the tank from the front.

1050 Gph is a tad higher for that size of tank (I only run 650-750 Gph on my 200-gallon system).
I agree, but if I lower the return pump flow, the water level drops below the weir. Water will still go down the overflow, but flow through the lower flow grill to get there instead of through the weir.

so your turnover is quite high for this tank too. Is your pump controllable? If you can turn it down to a 2-300 gph, you’ll see what I mean. The weir will be completely out of the water.

My pump is probably not running quite 715 gph due to the plumbing in my sump area. I have a Fiji cube 15 sump under mine instead of a rea sea sump. I know in the rea sea manual they tell you to put the grill in instead of the plug when adding a sump to the E-170. Do you have the media tower in the back compartment still? I did experience my back chamber emptying real fast when I had the plug installed when I first added my sump.

I added the grill and it all balanced out. You can always add a gate valve to the plumbing for more control of the flow. Do you have a recirculating pump on the right side?
