I found a red sea max 130 for sale on craigslist for $350. I'm guilty of not quarantining my corals or fish and want to correct this. I'd like a small tank that looks nice, but that I can use as a holding area. Would this work? I've never had an AIO system before, but the red sea max 130 looks perfect for what I want.

yes. it will work. but you could do a QT for so much cheaper lol but if that's what you want, yes it will work.

well, you could still go much cheaper than 350 and look nice lol. 40 breeder, paint the back black, toss in some rock, a heater, and a powerhead and there ya go. less than 200. but like I said, if you want that red sea then go for it. are you planning to leave it running at all times or just when you have new fish?

I use a 72g. I personally like having a larger permanently running setup for QT, especially when it comes to wrasses and other fish that are somewhat difficult to throw directly into the tank transfer method. In between QT groups, the pods build a large population again which helps the next QT group have a steady food source as well. You can also keep corals and inverts in it, dose prazi without worrying too much and just let the fish get healthy and used to being in captivity without being stressed from other fish and without having to worry about ammonia (As long as you don't add too many too fast). I usually give them a few weeks in there, get prazi done with, then start them in tank transfer method afterwards. Other fish like tangs or others that I consider easy, I just go right to tank transfer and dose prazi during that.

yeah like trigger said, if youre going to set up a QT its best to leave it setup and cycled. you can dose a bacteria additive every few weeks if you like, or depending on how you set it up you can dose ammonia.

My plan is to leave it running all the time. I was thinking of using it as a small frag tank most of the time. I don't buy fish very often so I wouldn't need it but a couple times a year. The only reason I was considering the red sea max is it has a skimmer, lights, return pumps, and stand. It sounded like everything I would need, but my experience in the hobby is with customizing everything. I wasn't sure if the lights for instance were a piece of junk or the skimmer was useless.

Bringing back an old topic. I got a Red Sea 130 for $200. Want to use it as a quarantine tank but want to leave it up permanently as well. What Type of filter media should I use. I see the rack mod and skimmer mod, are they worth it? What's the best way to cycle this new tank, don't want to use my DT water and media because I'm still not sure if there was ich in it.

I only have hang on back aqua clear filter, heater and sand in my 20 gallon QT
