So the unverified flow numbers are in. 350-400 gph though the line with the stock pump.

Caveats:

Additional head pressure from:

Flow goes pump>silicone tubing>2" UV unit>silicone tubing>barbfitting>thread to slip>union>sensor>stock Red Sea Manifold>VCA 2 outlet random flow generator.

The pump barn fittings still have the 1/2" portions on them.

*Edit:I do not know the age of the return pump and its parts. *

I haven't completed the math for what my head loss should be.

I want to recheck my electrical connections and make sure they aren't loose.

I might try a Varios8 or taking the UV out of line to see what happens to my numbers.

Are you saying that you are pushing all return water through UV? I have my UV on dedicated flow line with Jecod 4000 pump. This loop include UV + chiller and returns into socks area (no socks

) filled with bio-cubes. I am running this loop around 100 gph and can adjust independently from the main flow as needed.

@ibondy correct. The recommended way to connect a UV unit is to have it output as far from the input as possible; having its own return line is ideal in an aquarium is ideal.

When I sized my UV unit I went off the return pump's rating and µw/cm² that I was aiming for. Bright side is that I will have more contact time and sterilization.

Changed my mind and bought the Abyzz A100 yesterday.

Been studying... ;Bookworm that pump with RedSeaKev for the last two years.

It better be bullet proof, and have no desire to control it with Fusion.

Wow!!! Super nice Freddie, the Abyzz is APEX ready so you can control it at will with Fusion. Congrats!

Lets us know which way you go.

Your S-650 manifold should be ready fit (turn valve and barb) to push a chiller or UV, but on the newer 650s, I think Red Sea plugged off that end of the manifold.

You do want to control it with Fusion.

In my feed cycles I turn off return pump and slowly bring it up to speed when feeding is done. I do not even run the back wall circulation pumps for some feed cycles, I only run my 2 Wav pumps on the sides, to make sure none of the food get flushed into my Clarisea roller filter in the sump.

For an S-650, that would be the way to go for myself too.

Yes, it is plugged on mine, but I am not using it.

You could unplug it and run the hose or pipe wherever you need, if you chose to do so.

I originally planned on running without he manifold in place, but a union that fit the return eluded me. Hopefully tomorrow I'll post an update in my build thread with visual details and a ton of clouds.

Definitely a bad pump. It has failed twice today. No debris or signs of wear when I opened it up. Leaning towards the Sicce Syncra ADV 7 or 9.

I am exploring the COR-20 but the Sicce Syncra 9 also looks very good.

Hello fellow Red Sea S-Series aquarist!
I am wondering if any of you switched out the stock return pump with another pump like the vectra or VarioS returns..... what kind of adaptor is needed to make one of these pumps work with the stock tubing provided. Thanks in advance.

This is what I did. Two Jecod 9000 DC pumps controlled by Apex. Cut the return pipe, glued metric to standard adapter, union, Neptune flow meter and a few elbows. Also have a check valve on each pump to minimize/prevent any back flow from the tank.

Looks good! I was trying not to cut the tubing and keep the lock fitting.... was thinking of getting a 3D part custom made to fit... has anyone done this?

Pipes and fittings on RSM are metric, I switched to standard, where it made a sense. Lot easier getting valves, elbows and pipes. I was thinking about 3D printing, but decided it was not worth the effort. However, I printed random flow nozzle for my return line.

I just don’t want to cut the hose in case I ever decide to use the stock return I won’t have that option if the click hose fitting is cut off.
