Anyone have a pic of the sump area or a suggestion for where to place the heater? Best thing I can find is near the protein skimmer but wondering if the heater will melt anything if it touches?

water pulls the heat away, so no issue there, only a problem if your return fails, then the water stops moving.

place it anywhere there is room, best not in the return chamber tho, if the water level were to fall for any reason, that is where the drop will happen, which may mean the heater is no longer under water.

This took me forever to figure out. I ended up buying a cobalt neotherm because it was the only think i could fit in the back. I slid it right next to the skimmer. It fits perfect and there is water all the way around it so I feel comfortable nothing will melt. The other thought i had was to get something that can be placed horizontally and try to put it under the filter sock and skimmer but that seemed like a nightmare.

I was after cobalt but hard to get in the UK, they are great for slipping in small spaces.

Always worth getting it on a heat controller, to switch it off if it should fail in the on position, such as a inkbird or the like, but as said in normal operation the heat won’t be an issue.

I have an ehiem 75w sitting right underneath the skimmer, no issues for the past 2 years.

I’ve got the 75w eheim down there now and ordering the new neotherm pro model 100w. I’m having the hardest time getting the eheim dialed in and it is such a pain getting in and out of there. Also think it’s a tad too large for down there - seems to touch the filter sock a bit which isnt ideal. Also feel like 75w fluctuates a bit more than I’d like.

Ping on this, I have a 100w thermocontrol-e placed just to the right of the skimmer (near the air inlet and the air tube). Only concern is: will the heater damage anything it touches back there (like the air tube), and what if I wanted 2 heaters for redundancy!
