I am picking up a red sea nano on Friday. It's the 34 gallon tank. They guy said his pumped was a little loud so I might want to get a new one.

What size should I get?

What do you mean what size should I get ?
What type are you getting?

REEFER Nano? The recommendation it a 2000lph pump. I prefer less than that however, 3-5 times an hour turnover is more than enough. Oh I looked back and it looks like you are talking about the 170. Same pump recommendation.

Yes it's the red sea 170.

Anyone have any pump recommendations?

I already have a mp10 for a power head.

Is is easy to set up a refugium in the sump?

I have a vios 2 on my reefer 170 and keep it at 75% and you can’t hear anything. I love it. It’s a little more money but it’s the lifeblood of a tank so spend the extra it’s worth it.

On my RS 170 I'm running a rio2100. Dead silent and is rated for around 500 gph according for head pressure.

Plus for about $50 you can afford a spare

I did run a mag7 first but thought it was a bit too loud

I use a Tunze 1073.050. It's nice to be able to adjust the flow with a DC pump, the feed mode is nice, and battery back up capability is always a plus, but with all that said, I would buy an AC pump if I had to do it over again. With AC pumps there's no controller or cheap power supply to fail. As said above, it's the heart of the system. Save yourself some money and look at a Tunze 1073.020.
