Hey Reefers ,

So I was really successful with my last 75g but I moved and had to break it down. I am starting another little tank and was thinking about the Red Sea E170. I wanted to post to see if any of you have this tank or have heard some good info on it. I know it’s an all in one system and the filtration is on the back of the tank but I was wondering if it was possible to have all the filtration and sump underneath inside the cabinets. Interested in your thoughts

Happy Reefing

Red Sea makes the 170 that has all the filtration in a sump underneath. This is the one I am going to be purchasing to setup soon; I like the option of having the sump for customizing equipment. I feel more limited with AIO setups

I have the max e 260 and love it, AIO I did not upgrade the to undercabinent sump. However, if you want that maybe a reefer series would be better as I believe it has more options for customization. However.... I LOVE MINE as is.

I picked up an E-170, but haven’t filled it yet. It’s definitely we’ll built. I’m curious about skimmer noise and performance, but if it sucks I can always put a Tunze skimmer back there. I already have a larger reefer 625xxl, so for this second tank I wanted a simple AIO with no sump. I feel a sump on these smaller tanks takes up too much real estate in the stand. A lot of the reefer 170’s with sumps I see posted on R2R have a second equipment cabinet for the apex and top off. I wanted to avoid that. I have a build thread for my larger tank where I will also document the smaller e-170.

It’s the Red Sea reefer model. Let’s you customize the equipment based on what you need

Red Sea makes almost exactly the same systems

Older Reefer series.

With overflow and sump, almost the same price. They are minus the return pump and skimmer. You want to replace those anyway at the start.

They do come with a rudimentary gravity feed ATO. 1 gallon plus glass tanks on the ATO. Placement is wonky, they sit on top of the retrun chamber of the sump

They also have back glass available for mounting Ecotechs and wavemakers so they are not on the sides.

RS seems to have discontinued the Nano Reefer. But they are still purchase’able on a few vendor sites.

The Red Sea 170 is I believe the same size with the sump; you can get it at a few different places online.

It is true there is not a lot of extra room underneath the tank with the sump, but I have seen some clever designs to fit everything without being cluttered. All I am going to need room for are a few dosing containers and my doser (everything else should fit in the sump) which should fit in the cabintet

and you can purchase it on the Red Sea website ?

Depends on where you are. Generally most online retailers in the US carry them.

However it will be on their Red Sea website.

They have the max version with the all in one rear sump and lighting with the option to upgrade and add on a sump below.

The reefer version comes with plumbing and sump below. They discontinued the deluxe version (with lighting) but will likely bring it back once the Red Sea lighting is released.

The highest end version is their Red Sea max S tanks that come turn key with everything you need.

Generally reefers prefer the reefer series because the sump allows you to customize what you put in it based on what you want in your display.

OK SO THE READ SEA REEFER e170 IS THE TANK I WANT CORRECT? SUMP TANK INSIDE THE STAND UNDERNEATH... CAN YOU LINK ME TO A SITE THAT I CAN BUY IT FROM ? DOES BULK REEF SUPPLY CARRY IT ?

That’s exactly what I want ! The sump comes with all the necessary equipment like skimmer etc? Also I thought the 170 was a 45 gallon ?

It only comes with the display tank, stand, sump and all plumbing. There’s an ATO reservoir as well which might be good enough to start but you’d probably want to upgrade the ATO. you will still need lights, skimmer, return pump, powerheads, etc on top of that.

The 170 is 34 gallon display with 9 gallon sump so 43 in total. If you want something bigger the 250 is a good size. 55 gallon display.

Ok that sounds great I think I will really like that ! Are there any other tanks that are better than this in that size range or is this basically the best ?

Innovative marine in their INT or EXT line

Waterbox has a couple good options and looks good

Cadlights but they don’t have the best reputation from a customer service perspective

Red Sea has the biggest and widest usage and good customer service and good community as well

Personally I like the waterbox and Red Sea look but I think Red Sea is easily attainable

Probably some I’m missing but just on top of my head for now
