Just looking for some input on this test kit. I have read the instructions, watched videos, and looked on here for some answers. It seems to be pretty common with people having a tough time with this specific test. So, a rundown of what I am doing. My tank is getting to the point where I am considering dosing the big 3 and trying to cut back on some of the need to do massive water changes to regulate alk, cal, and mag. (just a few lps, softies, and one monti cap) But I cant really even get coralline to grow on the glass or much of anything, which brings me back to checking these parameters. I am using IO sea salt, fyi. The tank has been running for 8 months, with live rock from my previous system. I have had the red sea pro test kits for a while and sort of stopped using the alk titration because I never trusted that I was doing it correctly. The card says to fill the syringe with 1ml of reagent and test vial with 10ml of test water. ok, got that. Now it gets cloudy, it says the titration starts when the color is blue, no big deal, that happens in a few drops. Moving on with the titration, I am expecting a blue to maroon color based on the chart. However, what I get is a change from blue to a light green then within a couple drops it gets a noticeable orange tint to it. I assume the test is complete, subtract what is left from the original 1ml and voila. This reading keeps coming back around 6ish dKH. Which seems correct to me for never really paying attention to it much before and letting it deplete between water changes. Out of curiosity, I add more reagent to see if it ever gets to the dark maroon but it never does.
My questions are, does the color changing to more of an orange rather than the maroon sound correct? And secondly, do you have to subtract the first couple of drops it takes to make the test water blue?

Based on these results I am going to start getting my big three back where they should be and begin dosing based on randy's recipe #1 to maintain the system. That is of course once I figure out how to do this titration.... UGHHH

Well, after doing some more digging on youtube I found this... I suppose I am doing this correctly, according to others comments, even though the colors don't match at all. I may just be picking up a Hanna checker for this.

It looks to me like you have the new test kit and the old instruction card.

The new test utilises a blue to green tritration then the end colour is yellow when you have passed the tipping point

The old kit used to be blue at first then gradually gets to a pinky red at the end.

Personally it’s a very hard test to compare to in my eyes the blue and green colours of the spectrum blend very closely together which means it’s your interpretation to decide when you hit the true shade of green.. or going the other way when you hit a greeny yellow and oversail the mark.

Check red seas web page they will no doubt demonstrate the same test that you have shown on the video here.

Ok, .I was wondering if there was something goofy going on. I will look at their website and see if I can find some more info. That's for the input. :)

I use Red Sea Pro. The test goes from blue to yellow. To me, the end point is a yellow green with not any blue tint. On repeated tests, I am +- about .1. The test replicates well. For me, it is not that important if it is 7.4 or 7.8. What is important is I know it is down .3 from yesterday.

Of course, if this test is driving you crazy, get Salifert.

@PatW that's what I have been doing. I make a mental note when the blue is completely gone, then add a few more drops to see if any other major color changes happen, if not then I go with my first reading. You are right with it being reliable, just tough to read

I just couldn’t understand why they changed the last blue to red kit to the one they have now..it totally throws me..
If it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it..
I now use salifert one, as that’s the same principle as the Red Sea one..

Maybe it was broken (inaccurate). :D

Randy, do you have any experience with the new version of this kit?

Thank you for the link. That seems like a much more logical and clear cut approach. I really enjoy how you specify the actual chemical reactions to justify everything. I like understanding why things work rather than just trusting the manufacturer

They changed to a new reagent since it is more accurate. The blue changes to green when the test is complete, when it starts turning yellow, you went too far. The old reagent never had a way to tell clearly if you added too much.

I agree that you are probably using the new reagent without the new instruction card.

You're welcome and thanks!

Happy Reefing. :)
