Currently I use Tropic Marin Bio-Actif salt but I was thinking if giving the Red Sea salt a try. From what I've read, the salt I use feeds your corals but raises nitrates because of the amount of bio-material in the salt. I've had great growth and have kept nitrates relatively low but thought I may make a switch (plus the the salt I have now is wicked expensive even with my discount at work). But what's the overall consensus on Red Sea Pro Coral salt? Thanks

I have been using rscp since day one. For growing out frags of sps it was amazing but now that there minicolonies to small colonies I've been noticing burning tips which i believe Is from the high alk. So I'm switching to the regular red sea.. because it mixes with lower alk... just my 2 cents

That makes a lot of sense, I have hard time with sps and I dose but have a hard time maintaining alk and my calcium is always high

My salt I use now runs calcium right on que, mag right on que, and alk a tad bit low. But i'd rather have a low alk than a high alk.

Red Sea Pro has great parameters, but for me i had excessive algea growth on my viewing panels. I switched to Reef Crystals and only have to clean once a week instead of once a day.

I use red sea coral pro and keep my alk at 9.

Alk is not permanent and gets used up, I do weekly 20 gallon water changes and I dose over 200 ml of alk 2 part solution a day and my alk is maintained at 9. When I switched from reef crystals to red sea coral pro my alk was already maintained at 9. When I do my 20 gallon water change my alk jump is unnoticeable because it is 10 gallon Saturday and 10 gallon Sunday.

Just because a bucket is labelled at an alk of 13 does not mean that is what the alk is in your tank. Btw I tested a 5 gallon bucket that had been mixing for a week and the alk was around 10 the specific gravity was 1.025 which is what I keep my tank at, the results and a photo of the test is on here somewhere. I use the red sea pro test kits as well.

Edit: I just tested my alk because my two part was off for a day because I need to remix it, and it was at 8.1 and I just got finished doing my water changes. I'll snap some pics for you guys an post them up, give me a minute.

I know I have seen at least one thread on here of several people saying to never use it.

ask member skinz78 about it. i think that is the right person who used this salt for a couple years.

ive used it for a little over a year now. i did notice an innitial boost in color and growth. i did however notice a jump in algae issues. also it was very very hard to get my mag to drop at all after using techm for byropsis treatments. i just switched back to regular old IO salt and my corals seem happier. instead of using the salt to get my levels where i want them im using brs 2 part. then i dont get the high levels of things i dont use much of like mag. its not a bad salt to use at all. but when you get larger corals or more colonies that require more than the water changes give its time to start dosing :)

Hmmm, I may just stick with the Tropic Marin Bioactif salt despite the $$$. Thanks for the feedback everybody. Overall, I'm extremely happy with it and I'm sure those who use it are as well. Just thought I'd try to find a way to be a little more cost effective but it works great overall.

In my 12g nano cube, I was using IO salt for the longest time. Everything was healthy, but I was keeping mostly LPS and softies, which werent as pleasant to the eye as SPS are. I wanted to see if I could grow all SPS in my cube. I started with a monti cap and it just did not look good. After reading, I decided it was because the IO did not have enough Ca/alk/mg to support it while doing weekly 5g WCs. I was not dosing anything either and did not want to get into dosing on a small tank. I decided on using a higher quality salt and chose RSCP and could not have been happier that I did. After the switch, I was growing not only montis, but acros. To sum it up, its a great salt.

My first few batches did not mix well and left a weird residue over everything. After researching, I found that the salt needs to be stirred around in the bucket before adding it to water (not sure why but it definatly helped). Also make sure you warm the water up before mixing and that there is a lot of flow in the bucket so the salt wont settle.
