Red Sea Reef LED 90 vs. Kessil AP9X

Hey,

I've got a Red Sea Reef LED 90 with the Red Sea Reefer 170 and the Kessil AP9X from my old tank.
I've keeping the Reefer 170 as my tank (34 gal), but which LED should I keep?

I think the AP9X is "way" better, but is it just too much for this "small" tank?
Im planing a mixed tank

IMO, it is not too much, but due to puck placement in the 170, I think you are going to have a ton of light spill outside the tank due to the height you would need to mount the light at. In terms power, it is just turning the intensity down.

Although, you can play with the height and see if you can keep all of the light in the ~24" x ~20" foot print. The AP9X is rated for 48x24, or something close to that. With the 9x, shadowing at the edges of the tank will be reduced, so that is plus. I would just be worried about the amount of light outside the tank, but If that does not bother you, I say give it a shot.

In terms of the RS90, they are not bad lights. they are 24x24 coverage, but depending on the scape, could have some shadowing on the edges. Light spill would be less with this light.

In the end, I think either light is fine and both would need to have intensity reduced due to tank size/water depth of tank.

What light did you go with and are you happy with the results. I currently have the same tank with and Red Sea 90 LED and am thinking of "upgrading" to an AP9X LED. I went to a trade show today and most of the suppliers were using AP9X lights and the colors were incredible!
