I just hooked up my new reef Ato+ and am already running into problems. I had it all setup and left for a few hours. At that time I got a notification that the pump had timed out and so was shut off. I went to check on the tank and the system had pumped RODI water to the point of being well above the sensor and then shutdown because the pump ran for too long. Any ideas on why this would be? My understanding is that it should start/shut down as the water level fluctuates between the two bottom sensors 1/8” apart? This definitely did not happen.

Figured it out! My line was too long and the syphon was short!!! It is now working. It also helps if it doesn’t move so wrapped the power line that way it doesn’t move. I’ll keep you updated but works like a charm now. I thought it needed cleaning after a 2-3 months but it was clean when I took it apart.

I just sent this email to Red Sea.

Been using the new replacement V2 Sensor for a few days now and still having issues with water level. The system water level varies too much.
Put the original water tank and float valve back in the reefer and then installed the ATO into the water tank so I could easily see how it was working. The sensors 2 lower pins were placed just above the water level, the unit started filling water and never stopped. When it reached the top of the sensor body I removed the power. Hope it would have timed out or there would have been a flood. I am also surprised at how fast it filled the tank. Picture attached of the sensor in the tank and shows the level at the top.
This unit is unreliable and now I know what my many weeks of skimmer and tank balance issues were caused by. This has put a well established tank into stress for no reason. I am sure it will recover. It required 25 hours of evaporation before the float valve opened, Way too much water was going into the tank.

Hello Philip,

Thank you for reaching back out to Red Sea. The unit is not designed to operate in a freshwater environment. The sensor uses conductivity to read the water level and therefore, cannot read the water level of freshwater. If you are testing the new sensor inside of your own RO reservoir, the pump will continue to run until it times out.

After one year the sensor on my RedSea ATO broke. It started with it getting crazy temperature readings (ie, saying tank temp was 120 degrees when it was in upper 70s) and then started not being to generate any temp readings whatsoever. Then it started to just not work whatsoever (showed as error in the app). I ended up just buying a replacement sensor probe and it has been working normally for the last month. This is an issue since the ATO regulates the water level in the sump. I hope I don't have to buy a new probe every 12 months! If the probe breaks again I will switch over to Tunze.

Follow up to my above post, received a new V2 Sensor and this one installed into the app with no issues. Been working fine for a couple of weeks now. Intend to do a monthly cleaning of it and hope this is the end of any issues. Have to say support help was excellent.
