Red Sea reefer 170 Return Pump

Hello everyone the Reefer 170 I ordered arrived friday and I don’t have a return pump yet I seen Red Sea recommends 584GPH but everyone is recommending a S1 which is closer to 2000GPH is that overkill? Because I can get a Jebao DC pump for 980 GPH for $65 will that be sufficient?

I use the Reef Octopus VarioS-2 on my 170 at 1/2 speed and works great.

Varios-2 on my reefer nano. Works excellent!

Just curious cause I’ve been eye balling these for my reefer 170 and as we all they they recommend to run a return of 530gph. The Varios 2 according to BRS website has a return of around 410 gph at a head height of 4ft while the Varios 4 has 660 gph @ 4ft.... so would this tank be better served with with the 4 tuned down? If you say you’re running a Varios 2 at 50% with 4ft head that should be low? Or am I missing something?

Most people would agree that there is really no need for that much flow through the sump. In fact i find it too loud when i put my varios2 any higher than 40% on my reefer nano. I like a calm, quite flow through the sump... 5 times turnover an hour is plenty unless you have specific goals that require more...
