Hi everyone,
I am wanting to change my outlet control valve for a ball valve, because the red sea’s is such a pain to adjust and control. I am fed up wjth getting up during the night and haveing to adjust it.
I need to know what size the actual pipe is and what size ball valve i need to buy.
Thankyou in advance.

While it's not difficult, it's not as easy as just swapping out the Red Sea valve f0r a PVC gate valve. First, the pipe is metric and it's not PVC. Second, the Red Sea valve is right next to the coupler. So even if you did source the correct metric gate valve, there's not enough room to cut off the Red Sea valve and add a new gate valve.

So you will need to do the following:

Order a Red Sea Reefer barbed return assembly directly from Red Sea out of Texas... the part circled below. This is their # Tel. : +1-888-733-7329

You will then unscrew the barbed fitting from the assembly. Next you will purchase a 3/4" MPT x 1" SLIP adapter... the following:

Since the Red Sea thread is metric, you will need to use some extra Teflon tape... about 10-12 wraps. Then it's just a matter of some 1" PVC pipe and a gate valve:

Thankyou very much for taking time out to help me, you have described everything as i would understand, i am based in the UK, and will be able to get everything needed. Again thankyou, you are a credit to the hobby.

The socket looks different to the one on the photo, it' more rounded on the photo. Is the p
ipe smaller than the Red Sea supplied pipe at all as the pipes in your photo look all the same in terms of diameter, if so do you notice any issues with it being a smaller diameter than the RS pipe ?. Many thanks

Hi,
this is not my thread this was sent to me by broadfield. As for diameter of pipes i used 25 mm od

Thanks, do find the 25mm okay ?, i have now mastered this. UK wise you use a 3/4 x 32mm socket fitting, then 32mm pipe :)

I just wanted to take a second and thank you for putting this information together. I know this is an older thread but it has helped me out! Thanks again!

Great instructions @broadfiled I am guessing it will be the same for my reefer 625xxl just different turns with elbows and cuts of piping.

Hello guys. 1st post In desperation. I am based in the UK and have just purchased a RSR 300XL.

I want to change the 16mm return hosetail to a 20mm one to allow for a wider diameter pipe and reduce flow resistance.

What fitting would i need to connect to the return main line in order to connect a barb/hosetail?

Please help!

Would I be able to do something similar while still using the sump return pipe as in the photos below?
