Red Sea Reefer 850s G2 - plumbing noise

Hi everyone, was silently lurking in the forum and decided to register and post - Happy to be here

Now, I have a red sea reefer 850s G2 and i am about to throw it out. The humming noise is horrible. I am running two reef run 7000 pumps on 30 percent each - connected to the return pipes with 60cm and 80cm silicon tubing. It still makes terrible nois and I can nail it down to the pipes. If I am pressing on them it gets better.

Question: anybody with a red sea replaced the entire return pipes with silicon tubing and would this potentially help?

I probably wouldn't replace the entire return pipe assembly with silicone (for a variety of reasons). I run a single Sicce SDC 9.0 on my 750XXL @45%, so you could probably be running these @20-25% - since they're essentially the same pump (which would help a bit).

Something else you can try is placing a few food-safe silicone pads under the pumps (this may help a bit). These pumps do get a bit quieter over time as well.

I found the issue is the pipes seem to amplify the vibrations from the pump (just the right combination of acoustics, I guess).

I have a RS Reefer 425xl and it is pretty close to silent. I'm using a sicce syncra 5.0. The only time I get a hum is if something (a cord, my ato tank) is accidentally touching a hose.

Thanks, so I guess I won't rip the pipes out and simply stay put for a month or two and see how it goes. I saw that Sicce is basically the same hence I doubt there would be much of a difference? Both pumps are not only placed already on silicon pad -they are literally wrapped in them.

Will also check what 425xl said - just to be sure. And also need to give some credit to red sea - no only compakining - besides the humming it's flawless and thing of pure beauty.

Sicce made the pumps for Red Sea based on their SDC models. There is a noticeable hum with my Sicce SDC 9 pump as well - but it has gotten quieter over the last 2 years. The pumps are separated, yes? ie: not touching each other?

Yes seperated. Pumps neither touching each other or anything else.

Try dropping the speed to 20-25% on each.

I can try this later however shouldn't I be worried about the turn over if I shave of another 10% each?

3-5x tank turnover is usually ideal. Right now you're running the equivalent of 60% on 2 pumps vs. the 43% I'm running on 1 pump. Just something to try - it may not make much difference in terms of vibration/noise.

Hi, did you solve the issue? Did the pumps settle in and lower the noise? Interested as I want to run a similar setup, so any advice and experiences are good

Also, quick question, how did you set up the two return pumps to the single return PVC pipe? Was thinking about doing the same (run both pumps at low speed or one at higher speed but having the second pump as redundancy) but I am thinking about how the one running pump will not just flood the second not running pump then instead of pumping the full water volume back up to the tank (probably with some valves or similar...)?

Thanks for your post - it reminded me of this topic and honestly makes me laugh now. I don't know what I was expecting to be fair

A setup like this will never be silent and let nobody convince you about anything else. First and foremost - the pumps. I I run two return pumps now on 40 percent and yes they are clearly audible but not bothering the whole house anymore. Partially this is due to break in and mainly due to getting used to it. You'll simply hear them. Nobody besides you can tell you if you'll will be bothered or if they are "silent" in your opinion.

On top of this I run another reef run for the UV, the skimmer and a Nyos Torq 2. So you'll always hear this setup.

But most importantly: the lights. I run three ReefLeds 160s each has 160 watt and is comparable to a gaming GPU also when it comes to noise of the ventilation. It's comparable to a hair dryer I'd say.

Overall the noise level of a setup like this can't be judegd by me for you because we have different opionions about noise. But I'll definitely tell you it's something between noisy and loud - it's NEVER going to be "silent" or "dead silent" - not even close.

Regarding the two return pumps: that's no problem it has two return lines you can simply connect one pump to each line. If you want to run one pump it comes with Y-piece to connect both return lines to one pump. I'd run two pumps anyway.

I do recommend you the Red Sea tank - it's great quality and very well made.

My tank is almost completely silent. It's a 5ft 117 gallon display tank with a Trigger System 36 Sump.

I'm guessing you're experiencing first hand that the ReefRun pumps are noisy as hell because they're based on the Sicce 9.0 pumps which are noisy as hell. Specifically the Sicce SDC 7.0 and 9.0 pumps are extremely noisy, and when I was shopping for return pump upgrades I went to the store who had Reefrun return pumps and they were untolerably loud with that same hum.

My Reef Octo Varios pumps are almost completely silent. The only hum I hear is a slight hum from my Reefwave gyres or the cooling fans on my AI 32 Hydras.


Before I had my tank plumbed with a proper gate valve it was extremely noisy and sounded like a toilet flushing all the time - unacceptable - but I hired a guy to fix the plumbing for me and it was all gravy after that.

I don't think you should just accept a noisy tank because of the notoriously noisy Sicce SDC pumps
Sicce makes good stuff but there is no excuse for that kind of noise from a DC pump.

Look at other return pump options. Varios 6 pumps are dead silent. So are the other quality DC pumps out there like ecotech and neptune.
