Excited to start a new build! (Even if its not for me!) My mom currently has my old IM 10gallon cube I set her up with a coule years ago, all her corals have exploded and her little clown is definitely out growning the tank (a sick baby clown was given to her at the LFS they didnt think would survive... it did and now is running outa room quick!) The size upgrade is overdue and time to fix that problem!

I recently picked up a next to free used Red Sea Reefer 170. The tank is not in great shape, it has a pretty bad leak in the left back corner. It also came missing the sump and all the plumbing. And to top it all off the stand was FULL of mouse poop. These is the problems I have come across so far.

I have a new set of pipes from Red Sea, and have started thinking of sump designs. I am planning on a basic 10g sump with a cheato fuge. I'm thinking I would like to add a small skimmer in the sump so any suggestions there would be awesome!

Yesterday I cleaned the tank with vinegar and found the major leak, I cut and stripped the old silicone. It looked like there was an air pocket in the factory seal that ruptured. A quick trip to petco and I got a tube of fish safe silicone. I made sure to draw the silicone thru the existing gap and resealed the outside and inside. I fugured the inside didn't have to be pretty because there will be a sandbed, so I went a little heavy with the silicone on the inside just to be safe. As long as there are no other leaks I am very confident in the reseal. Second round of leak checking will be done tomorrow once the silicone is totally set.

I mixed up a bleach solution and gave the stand a good wash inside and out. SO MUCH MOUSE POOP! Finally got the stand back to white and its looking really good.

I just put the the tank on the stand to dry fit the plumming and find where the overflow pipes will run. For a return pump I think I'm gonna run a sicce synco 2.0 it has a little more then the required gallon per hour flow rate and have had good luck with sicce pumps in the past.

I have never build a sump before so while I wait for my acrylic to ship I will be drawing up some designs. Like I said above the tank for the sump will be a standard Aqueon 10 gallon and I will be adding acrylic baffles. If anyone wants to drop their sump setups I am open to suggestions! I will be posting photos of my reseal job and sump designs soon and of course when I fill the tank tomorrow I will let you all know how it holds! Thanks for the read and any feed back!

We are holding water!!! All seems are dry and I'm very happy with with my corner patch

Last night I did a dry run with the piping and everything is there andnits well I think, now I have an idea of where to plan for the overflow pipes in my sump design. I will be picking up the 10gal tank tomorrow after work and my acrylic should be in this week! Things are starting to come together!
