red sea reefer media basket vs sock

My reefer came with 1 sock and 1 media basket in the sump. I just changed to use both media baskets. I put about 2 inches of filter floss on bottom --> chemi pure elite bag middle --> a few inches of filter floss on top.

What do other people do for socks baskets.?

I noticed water passes through slower so maybe I need to thin out the floss? its not overflowing the baffle but it does pool up now.

Interested in what people do here

Mine has been running 2 weeks and 1 week I was on vaca. I heard the socks need to be cleaned way to often and I wanted some carbon. Eventually I will get a reactor.

Its just starting a bad algae bloom with diatoms and green hair.

Also need a touch more flow in the tank

I found the Media basket doesn't have enough surface area and the floss clogs quickly. Same if you stuff a carbon bag in it, the surface area is small. (on the 4 inch, 7 inch probably better)
Temporarily its fine, but for long term usage I would rather have a reactor.

I went with the 4 filter baskets for my 750 XXL right off the bat, but quickly decided to use the socks after finding that I had to change the filter floss just as much and it was an additional cost that was not needed. I switched back to the filter socks about six weeks ago and found it much easier and I can use the baskets for carbon in the first chamber that the water drains into so I can still use the baskets for something.

The way I have it setup now is the first two socks are the finer material and the second ones are the mesh. I change out the finer material ones every two to three days and the mesh ones every four to five days. I bought four extra socks of each material so I can have a couple days extra to clean out the socks and I found them pretty easy to clean out. I am looking at the Triton Method currently, so eventually I will get rid of the socks, (or any mechanical media) all together, but for now they are working perfectly fine for me.

Tried both, went back to mesh socks, cleans easily in sink and nothing escapes the path. Floss didn’t seem to catch as much. I run carbon passively when I think I need to. Went the reactor route before on previous tank, was a pain.

I was convinced socks were a pain now you have me thinking baskets are. I think ill play around with both . the one thing with the baskets is I have some marinepure blocks in the chamber in front of it and on the 350 you pull out both baskets in the one sliding bracket and the baskets hit my marine pure and I need to move things around.

The mesh socks are very easy to clean, the white ones are a deviate pain to turn inside out, I threw those out.

I use a 225 micron in the front and the basket in the back with Chemi-Pure. The mesh socks I found let too much junk through.

The mesh works fine on mine, change out every 3 days, easy fix. I have a pretty clean sump with a SM drop and Nyos skimmer.
