Anyone else having a harder then usual time finding Red Sea salt. I'm still on my first bucket, but thinking of switching because it seems to be harder and harder to find. Red Sea Pro seems to be a lot more available.

It's usually a pain in the butt for me to find it too. Only one of my local shops seems to carry it with any sort of regularity. I have, however, found it to be always available from pet Solutions.

The big problem for me is that, since I run pellets, it's really the only salt matches up with the parameters that I need. I'm specifically looking for something that's going to mix to an alkalinity of less than nine.

You can adjust the alkalinity downwards of any salt mix by adding a mineral acid, if that is important to you. :)

The idea of this frightens me quite a bit, but out of curiosity what sort of mineral acid would you recommend?

I'd use hydrochloric (muriatic) or sulfuric.

Full strength muriatic acid from a hardware store like Ace is about negative 34,000 dKH. So about 0.1 mL per gallon will drop alkalinity by about 1 dKh. It will also drop pH a lot, but only temporarily. I'd do this in the mixing barrel, not the tank.

Be careful with it as it can burn you and especially don't get it in your eyes. :)
