So I've been using Red Sea salt blue bucket for about a month now. When mixing, I mix a day before my water change like I normally do. Now I find out you're not supposed to mix this salt for more than 4hrs? That's odd, I've done 2 full test on the salt and the perimeters tested close to what's advertised.

Wondering if anyone else is doing the same thing or mixing as directed (4hrs).

All I've ever used was Red Sea Coral Pro and I always start the mix the day before. I've also done a few roughly 8hrs before a WC and have seen no difference. Some people have there salt mix constantly mixing, so no worries man.

The reason that recommend 4 hrs. is because they say some of the elements can fall out of solution or something like that. I use it but never new this. I have always mixed beforehand and never had any problems. They have some great videos on there site Redseafish.com. Good stuff.

I mix my RS Salt vigorously for about 2hrs. I then shut off 2 of the 3 powerheads and raise the temp to 77 until I'm ready to do a WC; usually 1-4 days after the initial mixing. No worries.

I have always used reef crystals. No reason other than the marketing was better than IO. Do people like RS Pro Better?

I once let it sit for five hours and everything in my tank died off. I swear... directions are always so spot on!!! Sarcastic much?

I usually circulate and get the water temp up and then let it mix for a good day and never had any problems. But I have noticed that it does mix clear just within a few minutes.

I mix mine up, shake it occasionally for about 2 hours then change the water. I like it because you don't have to wait for days.

I just used red sea salt for the first time. I have a diatom bloom now and what looks like stringy slime? Never had this problem with sea chem.........Did you or anyone else run into this problem? My tank has been set up for years with no issues.

I have never had a problem. My tank looks better than ever actually. I have heard others say it caused an outbreak in their tanks.

Redsea salt will not cause algae problems. As with anything follow the directions as per mixing. These people are scientist they know there stuff.

I use it as well. Great stuff but I think the whole waiting period thing is overplayed. As long as its mixed and dissolved, not settled, it'll be just fine.

Mike I had issues with leaving a residue in my mixing bucket and also more algea when I switched to red sea 175g a few months back. Then again my algae has gotten worst since I switched to B-Ionic Salt so obviously it wasn't either salt mixes but something else I am doing wrong...

But as far as the residue, it went away since I went to B-ionic, why does Red Sea mix leave a residue?

Algae is caused by excess nutrients or phosphates. Salt mix will not cause algae. You need to test water before corrections can be made. As far as the salt leaving a residue that why they recommend mixing no longer than 4 hours before using.
