Red Sea Skimmer Sizing Help

Hello Everyone,

I am setting up a new 125 gal mixed reef with 55 gal sump underneath. I plan on growing chaeto in the refugium chamber as well. I really like the RSK skimmers but I am on the fence of which one I should get. According to Red Sea the 300 can do 160 gallons for mixed reef and of course the 600 can do a lot more. Since I will be running chaeto along with a skimmer, could I get away with the 300? Thank you all in advance for your help!

Depends on your bioload and what light you are using on the refugium. If you get a proper light and you don't plant on having a boat load of fish then I personally would save money and get the 300. You also dont need a skimmer right off the bat. You could see how long you can go with the refugium only and then get a skimmer once you start having too much waste product

I think many people underestimate the power of a good refugium. If you get some tumbling movement and a strong proper spectrum light then it can be an end all solution

I currently use an ai prime hd because I combined two smaller tanks into a big one and got new lights. However, I think if you go with these it should work well. Both of these lights are at the most usable light spectrum (except for red algae, which suprisingly uses green light as well as blue light). They are also splash proof. I know there are lights market for refugiums by AI and Kessil and what not but I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on refugium lighting when you can get good par and color for much cheaper. I also use a marineland wavepump to have my macroalgae tumble as to avoid shadowing or having top layers get cooked out of water when they float up

Both work based off of a chlorophyll A graph. They don't have amazing spread so keep that in mind. There are plenty of lights though so don't feel like you have to go with the one in the link.
