Red Sea Sump - Advice on Filter Socks

Hey all. So im setting up my 425XL V3 sump and had a few questions. I have 4 holders. How should I set them up initially? I have 2 250 micron socks as well. Should I put those in the 2 initial holes? The 2nd 2 holes have filter cups, how should I pack those? Or should I go cups then socks?

be careful with filter socks. They will need to be changed out weekly to work. If not you could have negative results.

This. I just decided to pull my filter socks because of this reason. They were keeping my Phosphates elevated and I was changing them every 2-3 days. Also, when they get worn then it could screw with your ATO system.

However, I would put your socks first to catch Detritus, etc before going into your cups.

I have the RedSea 650 Peninsula which has a similar setup.

If you do decide to run any kind of filter socks I would recommend you use 4 of the same, whatever you choose, otherwise water is just going to find the path of least resistance and the other socks will be useless. I run Triton method which recommends against filter socks so 90% of the time I leave the holders empty. I do have a number of 100micron socks and I use those if for example I am going around the DT with a turkey baster and blowing detritus off my rocks so that it collects in the socks, which need to be then changed/washed in a few hours.

If you decide to have permanent filtering there I would suggest 4 x 250micron socks, but as others have stated if you are not changing and cleaning these out fairly frequently they might have negative results (increasing nitrates and phosphates beyond what you want).
