I'm probably bring a complete idiot here but.... have a red sea sump, there's an adjustable baffle/gate before the return pump section. Even lowered to the lowest position, the water level sits at the max position - just below the glass baffle the other side of the sponge. I'd like it closer to the lower level -- but given the glass is higher, won't it sit at the top height no matter what I do? Or us the sponge blocking flow? (Should I just pull it out?)

You do have to clean the sponge now and then but the water should not go over the glass baffle. Water should go under glass baffle though the sponge. The adjustable baffle is to lower or raise water level in the skimmer chamber. I keep mine about a 1/4 inch from the top.

I clean my sponge now and then. I don't want it to become a bio filter.

Thanks. Yep, cleaned the sponge and water us just over the adjustable baffle. Sponge didn't look bad, but clearly was restricting flow enough to raise level in skimmer section. Now I know what to look for! Thanks. Still on my very slow learning curve....!
