I’m new to reef tanks and I’m about to dose calcium and alkalinity with two part. I went to test calcium and I noticed a bunch of white “flakes” floating in the sodium chloride solution in the Red Sea calcium test kit. Is this normal? Has the solution precipitated out? Is there anyone familiar at with Red Sea test kits that could let me know ?

I have those flakes in both my Ca and Mg bottles. Haven’t noticed them in my Alk. I just give the bottle a good shake let it rest for a second and draw a mL up in the syringe.

Similar experience here too. It has never been a problem for me. The Red Sea Mg and Ca tests result in an easy to see color change. Not so with alkalinity. It is much more subtle. I find it helpful to hold a white portion of the card stock behind the vile in strong light to see the transition from blue to a pale green. Nevertheless, I like these test kits. With practice you will get consistent tests, which are important.

Ok thanks guys. I haven’t started dosing yet and I just didn’t want to dose 665ml without checking on this first
