Hi guys, I'm lost in a delima here. So I've been using my red sea test kitsch for over 2montgs now. I noticed it was time to start dosing so I got the Neptune DOS. To get the exact amount to dose I had to test the tank every 24hrs. I've been and dose accordingly. I use BRS calculator to dose 2part. I have to adjust the dosing everyday to find my sweet spot. With red sea, I'll always be around
KH: 7 - 9 dkh.
Ca:430-450ppm
Im trying to get my Kh: 8 and Ca: 430. I just bought the Hannah checker and now my readings are all thrown off. Here's the problem. First day of using Hannah Checker gave me this reading.
KH: 11dkh
Ca: 488ppm
So I panicked and stopped dosing. Second day reading KH: 11dkh so I thought I should double check with the red sea. On the red sea marine test kit, I got KH: 7.28dkh. I still stopped the dosing. Both test kits are on the extreme opposite ends. Who do I trust. Should I keep dosing, should i stop dosing?

IME Hanna alkalinity checker is generally pretty consistent even if not always accurate. In your case two readings of 11 would likely indicate low alk consumption. Assuming nothing wrong with the Hanna reagent I would trust it over RS.

However, to be on the safe side and since alk is so important I would recommend buying a Salifert alk test to cross check. You may want to pause dosing for a couple of days to see what happens.

Hanna calcium is a different matter, it’s a very difficult test to run but fwiw neither value is a problem.

You can buy hanna alk references to double check the accuracy of your checker. Mine reads .1 dKH lower than the reference sample indicates it should, close enough imo so I dont even correct the numbers when I log them. Make sure you are using the hanna checker and the red sea kit, for that matter, properly.
